Manchester, NH - Pavel Rosa's goal 1:47 into overtime extended his goal streak to four games, and more importantly, it gave the Manchester Monarchs a hard-fought 3-2 North Division victory over the Worcester IceCats on Friday night at the Verizon Wirless Arena. The win was the second straight on home ice for the Monarchs, who also have home games scheduled for Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday in Manchester. Rosa's game-winner, his second in overtime against Worcester this season, sent the crowd of 9,231 away with smiles on their faces.
The Monarchs, who entered play with a 13-0-1-1 record when scoring the first goal, did just that at 14:44 of the 1st period. Yanck Lehoux's 12th goal this season was recorded exactly one second after a Monarchs power play had ended. Scott Barney and defenseman Chris Schmidt assisted on the play.
Even with the goal, the Monarchs were held to just seven first period shots compared to Worcester's 15. The IceCats added another 16 shots in the middle period and built a 2-1 lead with goals at from defenseman Tom Koivisto at 5:17 and defenseman Terry Virtue at 9:48. Tomas Zizka's goal at 15:29 of the middle period enabled the Monarchs to draw even at two. Steve Kelly and Pavel Rosa were credited with assists on Zizka's ninth goal. The Monarchs outshot the IceCats 3-0 in the extra period, but Worcester held the overall edge in shots by a 37 to 21 margin. Goaltender Travis Scott had 35 saves and improved his record to 12-5-1 overall.
The Los Angeles Kings on Friday recalled Manchester center Michael Cammalleri. The 5-foot-9, 188-pound native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, has five goals, 14 assists and 19 points in 11 games with the Monarchs this season. Cammalleri, a second round pick of the Los Angeles Kings (49th overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, has one goal, four assists and five points in two games with the Monarchs since being assigned to Manchester on January 9. The 20-year-old rookie has five goals, three assists and eight points in 26 games with the Kings, who he will join on their road trip to Calgary. The Kings meet the Flames on Saturday.
The Monarchs continue a four-game homestand on Saturday when they welcome the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to the Verizon Wireless Arena. Saturday's game, which is scheduled for a 7:35 p.m. start, will feature the Monarchs wearing their road purple jerseys as part "Reverse Jersey Night."
