January 17, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

Maxime Ouellet made 30 saves to backstop Portland to a 1-0 victory over Bridgeport on Thursday night. In his last seven starts, the 21-year-old Ouellet is 6-0-1 with a 0.99 goals against average, a .972 save percentage and five of his league-leading six shutouts on the year. Trent Whitfield scored the game's only goal for the Pirates, who are 9-1-1-1 in their last 12 games. It was the ninth shutout of the season for Portland, and the 16th 1-0 game in the American Hockey League this year.

San Antonio extended its unbeaten streak to nine games (7-0-2-0) with a 2-1 win over Manitoba on Wednesday. Jeff Toms and Jim Campbell recorded a goal and an assist each for the Rampage, and Chris Mason turned aside 23 shots. With the win, San Antonio upped its mark to 15-4-4-0 at the SBC Center this season.

LOOKING AHEAD:

Hamilton is a weekend away from rewriting the AHL record book again. In Rochester on Sunday (6:05 ET), the Bulldogs can set a new league mark by defeating the Amerks and winning their 14th consecutive road game. And with Sunday's match preceded by two contests at home against Saint John, the Bulldogs could extend their current 25-game points streak (21-0-2-2) past the AHL record of 27 games, set by the original Cleveland Barons in 1948 (21-0-6). It won't be easy, however, as the Flames are 17-1-1 in their last 19 meetings with the Bulldogs.

Western Conference-leading Houston brings its 13-game unbeaten streak (11-0-2-0) into Milwaukee tonight (7:12 CT), where the Admirals are 8-3-4-2 this season. The Aeros took a 2-1 decision in the Brew City on Jan. 12 on an overtime goal by Sylvain Cloutier. Milwaukee enters the weekend in a West Division logjam, tied for second with Utah and San Antonio and two points ahead of Chicago. Four different goalies – Jan Lasak, Chris Madden, Dan Murphy, Brian Finley – have started the Admirals' four games against Houston this season.

Two teams trying to keep sight of first place meet at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday (7:35 ET) as Manchester hosts Bridgeport. Although they enter the weekend six points back of Providence in the North, the Monarchs have five games in hand on the rest of the division, and are home for 10 of their next 12 games beginning Friday. With one win in eight games since Christmas (1-6-1-0), the Sound Tigers have fallen into a first-place tie with Binghamton in the East. Saturday's game matches Manchester head coach Bruce Boudreau with Bridgeport bench boss Steve Stirling, Boudreau's assistant in Lowell from 1999-2001.

The AHL helps commemorate Hockey is for Everyone Month with a pair of matinees on Martin Luther King Day. In Utah and Springfield, special programs will educate fans while celebrating and recognizing diversity in hockey and the local communities.
