Manchester Monarchs News Release
Hamilton, Ontario - Pavel Rosa's goal 1:05 into overtime completed an amazing Manchester Monarchs comeback, giving them a 4-3 road victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs Wednesday at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario.
The Monarchs road win was their first in five tries. They had gone 0-2-1-1 in their previous four tilts away from the Verizon Wireless Arena. The win also allowed the Monarchs to draw even with the Providence Bruins for first place in the North Division. The Bruins lost 1-0 on Wednesday to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
With the Monarchs trailing by three goals and running out of time, Chris Schmidt scored his sixth goal of the season at 14:36 of the third period. Steve Kelly, who had missed the previous two Monarchs games with an injury, notched the second Monarchs goal just 1:12 later. Derek Bekar stretched his personal point streak to seven games with an assist on the play.
Bulldogs defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron was assessed a delay of game penalty with 1:15 remaining. The Monarchs next pulled goaltender Travis Scott for an extra attacker and played the final minute of regulation with a 6-on-4 advantage.
The strategy worked perfectly as Kelly was credited with the game-tying goal at 19:39. The Bulldogs were also assessed an unsportsmanlike penalty after the goal, setting the stage for Rosa's overtime heroics.
The Bulldogs dominated the second period and built a three-goal lead with a pair of scores. Marcel Hossa notched his 10th goal at 3:54, and Benoit Gratton, who entered play with the second highest point total in the American Hockey League, added his 12th goal of the year minutes later at 11:48. Hamilton's other goal was scored when Bergeron beat Scott at 1:52 of the first period.
Scott improved his road record to 4-0-1 and backstopped the Monarchs to their 13th win. The Monarchs will try for win #14 when they travel to the Pepsi Arena in Albany, NY to face the Albany River Rats on Friday, December 6. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. If you no longer wish to receive these E-News updates, please e-mail Katie McDonald at katiemcdonald@monarchshockey.com.
