Manchester, NH- The National Hockey League's Los Angeles Kings on Monday assigned right wing Steve Heinze (Lawrence, MA), center Derek Armstrong (Ottawa, Ontario), and left wing Ryan Flinn (Halifax, N.S.) to the Manchester Monarchs. The Monarchs also on Monday assigned defenseman Jimmy Verdule (Montreal, Quebec) to the Reading Royals of the East Coast Hockey League.
Heinze, 32, has compiled 173 goals, 151 assists, and 324 points in 11 NHL seasons. Last year with the Kings, the 6-foot, 195-pound wing collected 15 goals, 16 assists, and 31 points in 73 games. Heinze, a third round selection (60th overall) of the Boston Bruins in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft, is a veteran of 667 NHL games. During his 11-year career, Heinze has also played for the Boston Bruins, the Columbus Bluejackets, and the Buffalo Sabres.
Armstrong, 29, spent the 2001-02 season in Europe skating for SC Bern of the Swiss National League. Flinn, 22, amassed 314 penalty minutes in stints with the Royals, the Monarchs, and the Kings last year. The 6-foot-5, 248-pound wing began the 2001-02 season with the Royals, totaling one goal, three assists, four points, and 130 penalty minutes in 20 games. Flinn's spirited play earned him a call-up to the Queen City, where he collected one assist and 133 penalty minutes in 37 games. Flinn, a fifth round selection (143rd overall) of the New Jersey Devils in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, also appeared in 10 games with the Kings, amassing 51 penalty minutes during his NHL tenure.
Verdule, 24, appeared in two of the Monarchs four recent preseason games. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defenseman collected one assist, 21 penalty minutes, and a plus-1 plus/minus rating in the two games.
The Manchester Monarchs 2002 preseason roster consists of 24 players (15 forwards, six defensemen, and three goaltenders) after the latest transactions.
