(Marion, IL) - The Southern Illinois Miners (51-35) scored six runs in the fifth inning Saturday night as the Florence Freedom (38-47) dropped game two of the three-games set by a score of 11-4.

Florence fell behind early as the Miners scored two runs in the first. Jay Austin doubled to start the frame and advanced to third on a ground-out. After Niko Vasquez drew a walk, Frank Martinez drove Austin in with a sacrifice fly. Three more walks forced a run across the plate and Southern Illinois lead 2-0.

Freedom starter Jorge Marban (4-5) surrendered three more runs in the third. Vasquez homered to start the inning. Martinez reached on an error and Aaron Gates followed with a single. Chris Burke walked and one out later Steve Marino doubled in two runs to make it 5-0 Miners. That was it for Marban as Michael O'Neal entered the game.

O'Neal started out well but struggled in the Miners' six-run fifth inning. Gates singled and Burke got hit by a pitch. One out later Marino walked to load the bases and Matt Jones singled in the first run of the inning. Austin reached on a RBI fielder's choice and Ryan Cavan launched a three-run home run. Vasquez followed with his second homer of the night to make it 11-0 in favor of the Miners.

At that point Chris Cummins entered the game and tossed three and a third shutout innings to finish the night. Meanwhile the Freedom scored one run in the sixth as Sam Eberle drew a bases-loaded walk. They added another run in the seventh on a Chance Ross two-out RBI single. Florence tallied two more runs in the eighth on a RBI double by Eberle and a RBI single by Jacob Tanis.

Miguel Ramirez (9-4) picked up the victory for the Miners as he went seven innings, scattering six hits, allowing two runs, walking two and striking out eight.

The Freedom will look to take the rubber match on Sunday as they send All-Star Chuck Weaver (6-5, 2.15 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. eastern time.
