NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, scored five times in the opening inning and cruised to a 10-4 win over the Traverse City Beach Bums on Saturday night at the Corn Crib.

The CornBelters put up a crooked number in their first time up, batting around and scoring five times on an error, a wild pitch, an RBI single by Aaron Dudley and a two-run base hit by Jhiomar Veras for a quick 5-0 lead.

A two-out RBI double by Sam Judah in the second inning built the advantage to 6-0. The Beach Bums broke onto the board in the third inning with a solo home run down the left field line by Jake Rhodes.

Judah extended the Belters lead to 9-1 with a bases-loaded-and clearing double just inside the right field line in the sixth inning.

The Beach Bums plated three runs in the seventh inning by putting the first four hitters on base and scoring on a single by Sean Gusrang, a ground out by Rhodes and a sacrifice fly by Jeff DeBlieux to cut their deficit to 9-4.

The Belters pushed an insurance run across in the eighth when Dudley collected a one-out RBI single.

Mike Devine (2-1) earned the win with six innings on the hill, giving up all four runs on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Bums starter Rusty Shellhorn (4-5) worked only three innings and took the loss.

The Belters conclude the series with a 6 p.m. Sunday first pitch against the Beach Bums. The Belters send right-hander Cullen Babin (6-6, 4.38 ERA) to the mound while Traverse City counters with righty Scott Vachon (2-2, 4.46). Heartland Bank and Trust Family Fun Day features $1 hot dogs and a post-game autograph session. Details can be found at the team web site, www.normalbaseball.com .
