Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, moved back into sole possession of first place with their 11-3 triumph of the Gateway Grizzlies Saturday at CONSOL Energy Park. The Evansville Otters and Rockford Aviators game in Rockford, IL was rained out earlier this evening.
In the bottom of the first Washington sent all nine batters to the plate. Outfielder Scott Kalamar hit his team-leading eighth home run of the season, a three-run shot and the Things added another tally in the first to give them an early and comfortable lead, 4-0. Infielder Carter Bell plated a run in the top of the second to put Washington ahead by five.
The Wild Things batted around for the second time in the game in the bottom of the fifth. A pair of two-run singles by catcher Jim Vahalik and infielder Austin Wobrock followed by a RBI groundout by infielder Garrett Rau gave Washington a comfortable 11-0 advantage.
Gateway plated three runs in the final four innings of the game to make the score 11-3 but Washington cruised onto their 51st win of the season.
Washington starter Shawn Blackwell earned his tenth win of the year going five innings, allowing four hits, and striking out five. Grizzlies' starter Tyler Thompson suffered the loss allowing eight earned runs in just 4 1/3 innings of work.
Gateway's catcher Landon Hernandez played his final game in the Frontier League on Saturday as the five-year veteran of the Grizzlies moves onto continuing his education and baseball coaching at the University of Hawaii. The three-time All-Star did not have a hit in his last Frontier League appearance but did throw from the mound in the eighth inning and allowed no runs.
