Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
NORMAL, IL - The Normal CornBelters jumped out a to a six-run lead in the first two innings and used the advantage to coast past the Traverse City Beach Bums 10-4 on Saturday night at the Corn Crib.
Normal blitzed Rusty Shellhorn right out of the gate by putting the first three on base, the last of which was an infield single with a throwing error on top to make it 1-0. A wild pitch put Normal on top 2-0. With a runner at second and one away, Aaron Dudley lined a single up the middle to make it 3-0 before Jhiomar Veras drilled a two-run single to cap off the five-run frame.
Sam Judah added a run in the second inning on a two-out RBI double to grow the lead to 6-0. Shellhorn (4-5) gave up six runs on seven hits in only three innings of work to take the loss.
Jake Rhodes got a run back for Traverse City with an opposite-field solo home run in the top of the third inning. It was Rhodes third homer of the year and was part of a solid night in which he went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
The score remained 6-1 until the sixth inning when Judah smashed a bases clearing, three-run double that just stayed fair to push Normal ahead 9-1.
Traverse City had a response in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs of their own. Jovan Rosa led off the frame with a double and promptly scored on a Sean Gusrang single. TC eventually loaded the bases with nobody out and got a run on a RBI groundout from Rhodes and another on a sacrifice fly from Jeff DeBlieux to make it 9-4.
Normal added a tally in the last of the eighth to bring the score to the final margin. Mike Devine (3-4) picked up the win for the CornBelters, lasting six-plus innings while allowing four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
Traverse City will look to avoid the sweep on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. ET. Scott Vachon (2-2, 4.46) gets the ball for the Beach Bums against the CornBelters' Cullen Babin (6-6, 4.38). Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 6:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
