Brad Miller had two hits and scored two runs and the Southern Illinois Miners turned four double plays as the Miners downed the Windy City ThunderBolts 5-4.
With the loss, Windy City drops a game behind the Miners and fell percentage points behind River City in the wild card race. The Rascals beat Evansville 5-1.
Windy City manufactured a run in the top of the first inning as Gilberto Mejia led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, took third on a throwing error and came in to score on a groundout by J. T. Restko for a 1-0 Bolts lead.
The Bolts would take some early command in the second as with Nate Hall on second base after a walk and a steal, Vinnie Scarduzio lofted a double into the left-centerfield gap, bringing Hall home for a 2-0 Windy City edge. Dan Jordan came up next and followed with an opposite field homerun, making it 4-0 ThunderBolts.
The Miners would get on the board in the fourth inning as they led off the frame with back-to-back doubles and a single to score a run. A sacrifice fly from Andrew Sweet followed, bringing home Brad Miller to cut the lead to 4-2.
Southern Illinois would bust out in the sixth inning for three runs including RBI hits from Brad Miller and Jereme Milons as the Miners took a 5-4 lead. Windy City had a scoring opportunity in the eighth as the put runners on the corners with two outs, but closer Mike Damchuk was summoned from the bullpen and was able to get Kraig Binick to ground out for the final out of the inning. Damchuk then retired the Bolts in order in the ninth for his sixth save of the season.
Brett Scarpetta (6-4) picked up the win going seven innings allowing four runs, three earned on seven hits. Ross Stout (12-5) took the loss for Windy City.
The series continues on Wednesday with Dustin Pease (11-6, 3.87) going for Windy City against Danny Zeffiro (5-4, 5.00) starting for Southern Illinois. The ThunderBolts will host the Chicago Blackhawks Alumni softball game on September 7 at 4:00 p.m. It is a 16" softball game between the Blackhawks Alumni and the Chicago Fire and Police Departments. Stan Mikita, Dennis Savard and Tony Esposito are among the alumni who will be in attendance. Tickets to the game are $12 and are available at the Standard Bank Stadium box office.
