Fagan complete game leads Lake Erie to win
September 1, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Avon, OH-Left-hander Paul Fagan delivered another superb performance on the mound for Lake Erie, going the distance for a complete game victory as the Crushers topped the Florence Freedom by the final of 5-1 at Champion Window Field on Tuesday night.
Fagan at one point retired 17 batters in a row and 20 of 21. He allowed only four hits and two walks, while striking out seven. With the complete game masterpiece, Fagan becomes the Frontier League's first 14-game winner.
The Crushers got off to a good start in the first inning against Florence right-hander Preston Vancil, as Gordon Gronkowski and Eddie Tisdale each delivered RBI singles. On Tisdale's RBI hit, Gronkowski would score on an error by the Freedom's Johnny Welch to give the Crushers a 3-0 advantage. Florence scored their lone run in the first against Fagan as a throwing error by the Crushers ace resulted in Tim Grogan scoring with two outs to cut the Crushers lead to 3-1.
While Fagan held the Freedom in check, the Crushers were given numerous free passes by Vancil. The rookie walked seven batters on the night, but was able to work his way out of trouble thanks to three double play groundouts by the Crushers. Lake Erie finally got to Vancil in the seventh as Wayne Bond was hit to start the inning, and would ultimately score on an error by Freedom catcher Justin Pickett. The Crushers added an additional run in the eighth inning as Tyler Johnson led off with a triple and would score on a sacrifice fly by Arden McWilliams.
The Crushers with the victory improve to 53-37, and thanks to a Kalamazoo loss to Washington, Lake Erie is only a game and a half in back of the Kings for first place in the Frontier League's East Division with five games left. The Crushers also continue to hold one of the two spots for the league's Wild Card race. Lake Erie will continue their series with Florence on Wednesday night at 7:05 P.M. with Alberto Rolon scheduled to face Allan Donato.
The Lake Erie Crushers are the newest expansion team in the Frontier League, an independent professional league with 12 teams throughout the Midwest. The team plays its home games at All Pro Freight Stadium, the new 5,000 capacity ballpark located at the intersection of I-90 and Route 611 in Avon. Season tickets and Mini-plans are on sale now!
