Florence Y'alls News Release

FLORENCE, KY - Paul Fagan picked up his league leading fourteenth win Tuesday night at Champion Window Field as the Lake Erie Crushers defeated the Florence Freedom 5-1.

Fagan (14-3) allowed only one unearned run in his first complete game of the season. The left-hander retired 20 straight Freedom from the third through eighth innings.

Lake Erie was able to get to Florence's starter Preston Vancil in the first as the right-hander was a little wild. With two on courtesy of a walk and hit-by-pitch, Gordon Gronkowski singled in Drew Saylor to make it 1-0. With two gone, Eddie Tisdale knocked in a run with another Crusher crossing home plate on a Freedom throwing error to make it 3-0.

The Freedom's lone run came in the bottom of the first when Brad Hough grounded a ball that was gathered by Fagan up the first base line, Fagan ended up hitting Hough in the back on his way to first which allowed Tim Grogan to score from third.

Erold Andrus led off the third inning for the Freedom with a double, but that was Florence's last base runner against Fagan until he had two outs in the eighth.

Meanwhile Vancil was able to get in and out of Crusher threats despite control problems through the sixth. The right-hander allowed another unearned run in the seventh inning before being taken out for Demetrius Banks. Vancil (6-3) walked seven in 6 2/3, allowing four runs, two earned, but only allowed three hits in the loss.

With the defeat, the Freedom (47-44) were officially eliminated from the Frontier League playoff picture. The team has five games left and has to only win one to improve on last season's 47-49 record.

Game two of the series will see right-hander Allan Donato (0-1, 4.50 ERA) match up against Crusher righty Alberto Rolon (3-1, 3.60 ERA). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. with only two more games remaining for the Freedom at home this season. For tickets, call the Freedom at (859) 594-HITS or visit FlorenceFreedom.com.
