Miners Strike Late to Win Game Two
August 4, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums took an early lead, but were unable to hold it as the Southern Illinois Miners took game two of the series by a 5-1 final.
Despite the loss, the Beach Bums still hold a two game lead in the Frontier League, both in the East Division and for the best overall record heading into Sundays series finale.
Traverse City went on top in the second inning as Jeff Flagg singled to lead off the frame and moved to second when Sean Gusrang walked. Travis Higgs came up and lined a single into center to score Flagg. On the throw to the plate, the ball was cut off by Carlos Mendez who threw to third to retire Gusrang.
Southern Illinois got their first runs of the game in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, the Miners had the bases loaded with one out when Chris Anderson popped a ball to Ryan Still. The infield fly rule was invoked meaning that Anderson was out and that the runners could advance at their own risk. On the play, Still was unable to secure the pop-up and Cory Harrilchak came in to score to tie the game. In the fifth, Harrilchak factored in the scoring again, lifting a fly ball to center for a sac fly to score Cannon Lester who singled to lead off the inning.
The Miners would put the game away with a three run eighth, two of the runs coming on a bloop single off the bat of Lester.
David Harden (7-4) pitched seven innings to get the win. Scott Dunn (3-3) took the loss. One encouraging sign for the Beach Bums was the performance of Reid Kelly who, after being activated off the injured list earlier in the day, tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of work.
The series will wrap up with a Family FUNday Sunday at Wuerfel Park. Kids tickets are half price with the purchase of an adult chairback seat. Kids can run the bases after the game as well and there is also a full-team autograph session following the contest. Jacob Clem (4-4, 2.88) will get the start for Traverse City against Brian Fowler (5-6, 3.29) for the Miners. First pitch is slated for 5:05 p.m.
