
Miners "Achieve" Series Win

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners defeated the Traverse City Beach Bums by a score of 5-1 at Wuerfel Park on Saturday. David Harden pitched seven innings in earning his seventh win of the season. He gave up six hits and allowed one run. He walked two batters and struck out five. Miners Manager earned his 400th career win as a manager in Independent baseball.
The Beach Bums took an early lead off Miners starter David Harden as catcher Travis Higgs with one out hit a base hit and RBI to score Jeff Flagg to give the Beach Bums an early 1-0 lead. It would be the only run Harden would allow and the only run scored all game for the Beach Bums.
The Miners tied the game in the top of the fourth inning off Beach Bums starter Scott Dunn as Chris Anderson brought in Cory Harrilchak with a ball hit to short right field to tie the game at 1-1. Beach Bums second baseman Ryan Still tried to make the play but committed an error by not holding on to the baseball.
The Miners added another run off Dunn in the top of the fifth inning as Cory Harrilchak hit a sacrifice fly to score Cannon Lester with two outs to give the Miners a 2-1 lead. Beach Bums starter Scott Dunn pitched 4.2 innings and gave up two runs. He allowed five hits and struck out three batters in earning his third loss of the season.
The Miners scored three runs off Beach Bums reliever Nick Capito in the top of the eighth inning to take a 5-1 lead as Carlos Mendez hit a base hit and RBI. Cannon Lester capped off the inning with a two out single to right center field to bring in Carlos Mendez and Will Block.
Miners reliever Nick Cicio pitched a scoreless eighth inning by striking out two batters. Gabriel Shaw pitched the ninth inning and struck out one batter to close out the game for the Miners. The Miners won the game 5-1.
The Miners improve to 42-29 on the season with the win and now trail Traverse City by two games in the Eastern Division. The Beach Bums fall to 44-27 on the season. First pitch tomorrow at Wuerfel Park will get underway at 4:05 pm. The Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show with Mike Ventola will get underway at 3:45 pm on the Miners Radio Network.
