Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (28-42) @ SCHAUMBURG BOOMERS (41-29)
Saturday, August 4- - 6:00 p.m. CT
Schaumburg Boomers Stadium - Schaumburg, IL
Game #71 - Road Game #35 (28-42), (15-19)
RHP #30 Jacob Sanchez (3-1, 2.27 ERA) vs. LHP #34 Cameron Roth (8-4, 2.99 ERA)
Last time out...
Steven Maxwell went eight scoreless innings and David Fox clobbered a two-run home run in the seventh as the Slammers prevailed by a score of 2-0 Friday night against Schaumburg at Boomers Stadium. Maxwell's performance lowered his ERA in three starts this season against Schaumburg to a microscopic 1.96. Joliet had some opportunities early against Schaumburg starter Matt Kuna but could not cash in as they left the bases loaded in the second when Fox grounded out. But with Josh Lyon aboard in the seventh, Fox delivered his fourth home run of the season. The Boomers managed only three hits off Maxwell and Amalio Diaz notched his 17th save in 18 attempts with a perfect ninth inning that featured two strike outs. With the win, Maxwell became the team leader in victories all by himself this season with six.
For Starters...
Jacob Sanchez is coming off a no-decision against the Windy City ThunderBolts on July 30. He went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and left the game in line for the victory. But Joliet ended up losing 8-5. He suffered his only loss of the season the previous start against the Schaumburg Boomers as he went seven innings of one-run ball in a 1-0 defeat. Sanchez was the Midwest Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2012. Sanchez finished the 2012 Iowa Wesleyan season with a 10-2 record and a 2.42 earned run average, including 111 strikeouts, 12 walks, 71 hits allowed and 28 runs allowed (25 earned) in 93 innings pitched. He led the MCC in strikeouts and innings pitched, was second in wins and third in earned run average and opponents' batting average (.208). Sanchez obliterated the Iowa Wesleyan single season strikeout record, becoming the first player in school history to go over 100 K's in a season, and also tied the school record for wins in a season. He also was a recipient of a Gold Glove award with one error in 29 chances in the field.
Locked down!
The Slammers' pitching staff has recorded two shutouts this season...both of them against the Boomers. Last night's 2-0 shutout joined their June 12 8-0 victory as their only two shutouts of the season.
Going for the series win...
With a win tonight the Slammers would win their ninth series of the year and their fifth away from Silver Cross Field. They must sweep this series to record a tie in the season series against Schaumburg as the Boomers currently lead the season series six games to four.
Walk this way...
Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 46 walks this season, good for 6th in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 28 times in 237 at bats.
First inning success....
The Slammers have scored 48 runs in the first inning, most of any inning this season.
A down season...
The Slammers have 42 losses on the year, more than their entire regular season loss total (40) of 2011.
Leading after six...
Despite their struggles in 2012, Joliet is still 17-4 when leading after six innings.
Save me...
Last season Joliet native Ryan Quigley set the Frontier League's single-season record with 28 saves. Quigley is now in the Padres organization but former Angels farmhand Amalio Diaz has picked up right where Quigley left off. Diaz is second in the league with 17 saves in 18 attempts.
Error indicator...
The Slammers are 9-30 in games when they make an error. They are 19-12 in games when they do not.
