Normal CornBelters News Release
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, lost their fourth straight contest as the Evansville Otters exploded to their seventh consecutive win by a 17-0 score on Saturday night at Bosse Field. The loss was the widest margin of defeat this season, and also marked the most runs given up by the Belters in the campaign.
The Otters opened the scoring by scoring six times and batting ten men in the fourth inning. Luis Parache led off with a walk and went to second on a base hit by Nick Schwaner, then scored on a double to right by DeAngelo Mack. Dan Killian clubbed a double to the right field wall to score Schwaner and Mack and give the Otters a 3-0 lead before their first out in the fourth. Steve Marino walked with one out, then Runey Davis drove in two more runs with a double followed by an RBI single up the middle by Greg Fontenot to give the Otters a 6-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.
The hosts added to their lead in the fifth when Schwaner led off with a single followed by an error allowing pinch hitter Luis Uribe to reach base, and both scored on a Dan Killian double and a Steve Marino sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 8-0. The Otters made it 10-0 in the sixth on a two-out home run by Uribe over the left field wall.
The Otters scored for the fourth straight inning when Runey Davis knocked a two-run triple to the right center wall followed by an RBI single by Taylor Black. Schwaner and Marino added RBI doubles and a walk drove in another run to increase the lead to 17-0.
Adam Champion (5-4) threw eight innings of six-hit ball for the win. Brendon Smith (2-4) took the loss.
The CornBelters conclude the road trip with a Sunday evening contest at Bosse Field as rookie right-hander Drew Provence (3-1, 4.74 ERA) starts on the mound for the Belters with righty Wynn Pelzer (0-2, 4.43 ERA) scheduled to take the ball for the Otters. Pre-game on WJBC.com begins at 5:50 p.m. Sunday with first pitch at 6:05.
