Joliet Slammers News Release
(Schaumburg, IL) - The Joliet Slammers (29-42) scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back as they blanked the Schaumburg Boomers (41-30) for the second straight night in a 5-0 win on Saturday.
The game was delayed for an hour beforehand but that didn't bother the Slammers' offense. With one out in the first Brad Netzel and Abel Nieves smacked back-to-back singles. Then with two away, David Christensen drove a ball to deep right-center. Schaumburg outfielder Steve McQuail dropped the ball and two runs scored for Joliet.
After that Jacob Sanchez (4-1) and the Joliet pitching staff took over. Sanchez threw six scoreless innings, scattering five hits, walking two and striking out five for the win.
Joliet added an insurance run in the fifth. Matt Mirabal started things off with a single to right. Patrick Norris bunted him to second base and Brad Netzel grounded out to second to move him to third. Mirabal would score on a Cameron Roth (8-5) wild pitch to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Slammers.
Roth went seven innings, scattering five hits, giving up three runs (one earned), walking four and striking out seven as he took the loss.
Schaumburg mounted their biggest threat in the seventh inning against the Slammers. They loaded the bases with two outs against Chase Doremus. So Bart Zeller brought in Mike Barsotti who struck out Nate Baumann on a nasty curve to end the inning.
The Slammers added two in the eighth on an opposite field Kyle Maunus two-run home run.
Daniel Carela and Geoff Brown finished off the combined shutout for Joliet.
The Slammers have a chance to sweep the series and even the season series tomorrow afternoon as they send Tommy Mendoza (3-5, 4.58 ERA) to the hill. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m. and all the action can be heard on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.wjol.com.
