SAUGET, Ill. - Tim Brown fired eight scoreless innings and the Gateway Grizzlies offense piled on plenty of runs to give the Grizzlies their second straight 9-0 win Saturday night at GCS Ballpark.
The win was the third in a row for the Grizzlies and it gave them their ninth straight series win.
4,714 fans saw the Grizzlies (42-29) pick up their second straight shutout, with Brown (8-2) supplying the pitching. The right-hander from St. Louis, MO surrendered only five hits against the Rascals (34-37) in his eight innings of work. He struck out three and walked only one, lowering his ERA to 2.08.
Alex Guthrie put the Grizzlies on the scoreboard with a two-run home run in the first inning.
The score stayed the same until the sixth when the Grizzlies tallied four runs, with three coming on a Landon Hernandez home run. It was his third in two games. Hernandez has driven in six runs in two games in the series.
Gateway scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth to finish off the games scoring.
Guthrie and Chris McClendon paced the Grizzlies with two hits each.
The win, coupled with the Schaumburg Boomers loss to Joliet, brought the Grizzlies into first place all alone in the Frontier League West Division.
Gateway returns to action on Sunday night with Alex Kaminsky (7-4) getting the start. First pitch is set for 6:05 with the Grizzlies looking for the series sweep.
