Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
FRANKLIN, WI - The Milwaukee Milkmen earned the series split on Sunday afternoon after a 4-2 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (46-33) in the series finale between the two clubs.
The loss spoiled an impressive debut from starting pitcher Kevin Hilton, who was acquired on Friday along with outfielder Jonathan Moroney from the Texas AirHogs in exchange for four players to be named later.
The Milkmen got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Adam Walker picked up his 54th RBI of the year with a single, bringing home Manuel Boscan from second to put Milwaukee up 1-0 at the end of one.
Milwaukee doubled their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Garrett Copeland connected on an RBI double that scored Derek Reddy from first to go up 2-0.
Christ Conley would bring home the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth, blooping a single just past third base that scored Jose Rosario.
The Goldeyes were finally able to get to Milwaukee starting pitcher Jordan Kraus in the top of the seventh. After Adrian Marin was walked, Alex Perez reached on a single that moved Marin to third. Next up was Rey Pastrana who ripped an RBI double down the left field line to score Marin, and put runners on second and third with one out.
The Milkmen made a pitching change with Jake Joyce coming in to relieve Jordan Kraus, who left after giving up one earned run on seven hits, striking out four in 6. 1 innings pitched.
Joyce would retire Jonathan Moroney for the second out, and struck out Wes Darvill just moments later, but the ball found its way to the backstop which allowed Darvill to advance to first and score Alex Perez from third, and the Goldeyes were now within one, trailing 3-2.
Kevin Hilton's impressive debut for the Goldeyes would end after seven strong innings. The 27-year-old All-Star gave up three earned runs on 10 hits, striking out six in 7.0 innings pitched.
Milwaukee added an insurance run with two out in the bottom of the eighth to make it 4-2. All four runs the Milkmen scored were two-out base hits.
Dominic Ficociello had a fantastic afternoon for Winnipeg, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate.
Winnipeg will now head into their biggest series of the season, when they begin a three-game set in St. Paul against the Saints on Monday night. Winnipeg trails the Saints by just one game for 2nd place in the North Division standings, but the Saints are in action Sunday evening.
Monday's game will feature two of the best pitchers in the American Association going head-to-head, with Mitch Lambson getting the call for Winnipeg, while Eddie Medina counters for the Saints.
The Goldeyes return home on Thursday, August 15th when they host the Chicago Dogs at Shaw Park. Advance tickets are on sale now by visiting www.goldeyes.com/tickets or by visiting the box office at Shaw Park.
