Meyer Propels Wings over Bisons
April 15, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
BUFFALO, NY - Alex Meyer did not allow a run in 6.1 innings while striking out eight and Jorge Polanco hit his first Triple-A home run as the Rochester Red Wings beat the Buffalo Bisons 2-1 Friday night at Coca Cola Field.
Meyer (1-0) also didn't walk a batter, an encouraging sign for the former top prospect. He made his first start for the Red Wings (4-3) after appearing in relief on April 10. Meyer has started the season with 10.1 straight scoreless innings.
Polanco gave Rochester a lead before Meyer even took the hill, sending a line drive home run to left for his first Triple-A homer off of Bisons (4-5) starter Wade LeBlanc (1-1) with two outs in the opening inning. A bit of good fortune came the Wings way in the seventh as Wilfredo Tovar hit a slow grounder with two runners in scoring position that hit the third base bag for a literal base hit to score newcomer David Murphy. Murphy, who signed with Minnesota and was assigned to Rochester Friday, finished 2-for-3 with an infield single and the eventual game-winning run.
Meyer got the first out of the seventh before he departed in favor of Ryan O'Rourke, who needed only one pitch to get an out before he was lifted for Loek van Mil. Like O'Rourke, van Mil needed only one pitch to finish the frame.
The Bisons would score in the eighth as Matt Dominguez singled to begin the inning against van Mil and later scored on Jio Mier's RBI double off J.R. Graham to bring Buffalo within 2-1. Graham walked a man with two outs in the ninth but locked down his second career save in as many appearances for the Wings this season.
The team gave Voice of the Red Wings, Josh Whetzel, the best gift he could ask for: a brisk 2 hour, 26 minute game.
