Pitchers' Duel Goes to Meyers, Wings
April 15, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
The Bisons just didn't have an answer for Rochester's Alex Meyer.
The Red Wings' starter struck out eight and topped out on 99 mph to lead Rochester to the 2-1 victory over the Herd in the season's first fridaynightbash! at Coca-Cola Field.
Meyer held Buffalo to just three singles and faced only three batters more through the minimum through his 6.1 innings of work. Buffalo's Wade LeBlanc was tough as well, but allowed the two runs Rochester used to defeat the Bisons.
Meyer wasted little time asserting his presence on the mound with a 99 mph fastball on his second delivery of the night. He struck out Buffalo's Dalton Pompey in that first at-bat and set down the first seven Herd batters he faced.
In the fourth inning, Meyers showed his fielding prowess, jumping off the mound field Andy Burns' comebacker and then starting a 1-6-3 doubleplay two batters later to end the frame. He then allowed just one of the final nine batters he faced to reach base.
Buffalo's LeBlanc was impressive as well but did make one mistake. After striking out Darin Mastroianni and Buck Britton to start the game, a 3-2 offering to Jorge Polanco got too much of the plate and the Red Wings' second baseman hit it over the wall in left field.
LeBlanc struck out six and walked just one in his 6.1 innings of work. The other run charged to him after he had departed in the seventh. With two on and Chad Girodo in for LeBlanc, Wilfredo Tovar rolled a ball up the third base line that just wouldn't go foul. The ball hit the third base bag, allowing David Murphy to score
Down 2-0, but Bisons did strike against the Rochester bullpen when Jio Mier doubled home Humberto Quintero in the eighth inning. That, however, was the last hit of the game.
Buffalo is back at it on Saturday with a 4:05 p.m. first pitch against Pawtucket.
BISONS NOTES:
Domonic Brown was a late scratch from the lineup. Manager Gary Allenson said the outfielder has been sick and played through the sickness on Opening Day...Andy Burns and Dalton Pompey both made sliding grabs in the outfield to take away hits...The Bisons still have not allowed a team to score more than four runs in a game this season.
