Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Travis Taijeron and Rymer Liriano combined for six hits - four going as home runs - nine RBI and seven runs scored as the Mets dropped the Indians by a 15-5 final Wednesday afternoon. Jake Elmore had three hits and Darnell Sweeney laced his second homer of the year, but Indy fell below .500 for the first time since May 8 with the defeat.
Syracuse (48-48) climbed its way back to .500 via the long ball and another offensive onslaught. The Mets, who scored 20 runs on 22 hits in the series opener, hung 19 hits in the rout, including nine for extra bases. Through the first three games of the series, the Mets have scored 40 runs on 47 hits, 11 which have cleared Victory Field's outfield walls.
Taijeron's first blast opened the second against Eduardo Vera. Liriano followed with a double and later scored on a two-out balk. Danny Espinosa then pushed the Syracuse lead to 3-0 with a single to left.
The third inning featured more of the same from the visitors. The Mets brought nine men to the plate during the four-run frame that saw Liriano go deep for a three-run homer and Espinosa tack on a run-scoring double.
Indianapolis (47-48) came alive in the fifth against Anthony Kay, scoring three times on five knocks. Sweeney's 414-foot rocket to right put Indy on the scoreboard, and RBI singles by Erik Gonzalez and Will Craig tightened the contest to 7-3.
Ruben Tejada made it an 8-3 ballgame on an RBI single in the seventh, but Ke'Bryan Hayes pounded a two-run single up the middle after the stretch to pull Indy closer at 8-5.
The Mets scored the game's final seven runs to run away with their fifth consecutive victory. Taijeron's second home run came off Dovydas Neverauskas in the eighth, and Liriano capped the 10-batter, six-run ninth with a three-run shot.
Vera (L, 5-8) lost his second straight start after giving up seven earned runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings pitched. Kay (W, 1-3) earned his first career Triple-A win with six innings of three-run ball.
The Indians and Mets conclude their four-game series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. ET. James Marvel (1-0, 3.86) will make his third career Triple-A start against Syracuse's Walker Lockett (1-2, 3.92).
