LAST NIGHT: A 21-minute rain delay bumped back the start of last night's contest and a 28-minute in-game rain delay prolonged the outcome even further as Syracuse bullied its way past the Tribe, 5-2. Ruben Tejada remained red hot at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI. He broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with a two-out, two-run single off Mitch Keller. Two innings later, after the Tribe inched within one run in the sixth on a Will Craig RBI single, Tejada again delivered with two outs, driving a two-run double to the left-center gap off Sean Keselica. Tejada has 11 hits in his last 14 at-bats and 10 RBI during that four-game stretch. Rajai Davis tripled and scored in the first for Syracuse but exited the game early. Craig tied the game at one in the second with a leadoff homer, his team-high 18th of the season and first since July 1 at Louisville. Coinciding with losses by Gwinnett and Columbus, the Indians did not lose ground in the IL Wild Card or IL West races.

VERA DIFFERENT RESULTS: Eduardo Vera takes the hill this afternoon as Indy looks to pick up its first win of the series. Vera, 25, has been hit or miss on the mound in his first Triple-A campaign. Through 18 starts, he has allowed four or more earned runs nine times, including a career-high nine earned runs in 1.2 innings of work last Friday in Columbus. Vera has alternated months of success. In April he posted a 4.85 ERA in five starts but owned a 7.90 ERA in five May outings. He then put up a 4.42 ERA over six starts in June but has seen his July ERA in two starts balloon to 14.09.

18 AND COUNTING: Will Craig hit seven home runs in April and eight in May before slugging just one in June. His home run last night was his second of the month (also: July 1 at LOU) to make him the first Tribe player to hit 18 homers in a season since Andrew Lambo belted 18 in 2013. Craig's next long ball will give him the second-highest, single-season total for a Tribe player since 2006, trailing only Brandon Moss (22 in 2010). Craig is two dingers away from matching his career high of 20 set last year with Double-A Altoona and is on pace for 27 blasts. That number would be the most by an Indy player since Izzy Alcantara ripped 27 homers in 2002.

RBI MACHINE: Craig drove in both of Indy's runs last night with his second-inning homer and sixth-inning single to raise his team-leading RBI total to 53. Craig is on pace for 79 RBI, which would be the most by a Tribe player since Brandon Moss had a league-leading 96 RBI in 2010.

FACING A SOUTHPAW: The Indians are 10-10 in games where the opponent starts a left-handed pitcher, but the Tribe have had more success at the plate against southpaws than right-handers. Indy has hit .263 as a team vs. lefties and .251 vs. righties. Trayvon Robinson leads the way with a .406 average (13-for-32) against left-handers. Jake Elmore (.371, 23-for-62) and Darnell Sweeney (.300, 6-for-20) are both over .300 as well.

WALKING THE LINE: The Indians are back to .500 with 46 games remaining in the regular season. Indy's watermark was 11 games over .500 on May 31 (31-20) and June 6 (34-23), the latter record at the time being the best in the league. Since June 7, however, the Tribe have gone 13-24. The Tribe have fended off falling below .500 three times since they last sat below .500 on May 8 at 15-16. Indy was 42-42 entering play on July 5 but won both games of a doubleheader vs. Toledo 4-3 and 3-0. Indy was 44-44 coming out of the All-Star break but beat Columbus 5-4 in the second-half opener, and they were 45-45 heading into a July 13 matchup with the Clippers, a game the Indians won 17-5.
