State College Spikes News Release

FISHKILL, NY - Carlos Mesa's two-out RBI double plated the go-ahead run for the State College Spikes in the sixth inning, enabling Nick Kingham to earn his third win of the season after another strong start as the Spikes held on a for a 2-1 victory over the Hudson Valley Renegades on Wednesday night at Dutchess Stadium.

Mesa, who has been on the disabled list since August 3 before being reinstated on Wednesday, delivered his two-base hit down the left field line off of Hudson Valley (27-30) reliever Ryan Carpenter (1-1) to bring in Dan Gamache with the run that would prove to be the game winner. The Spikes (23-34) outfielder had been selected to play in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game held Tuesday in Lowell, MA, but could not participate due to injury.

Kingham (3-2), meanwhile, allowed the first run of the game in the second inning when Alejandro Segovia doubled and Raymond Church contributed a two-base hit to score him. However, the State College right-hander only allowed that run on a total of four hits, a walk, and a hit batsman over his five innings on the mound. It was Kingham's seventh straight start in which he allowed one run or less over five innings or more, and his first start without a strikeout.

Taylor Lewis produced the Spikes' first two hits of the game, and scored the tying run in the sixth inning when he crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Carpenter.

Emmanuel De Leon (4) earned a six-out save, yielding only a walk and striking out two batters over the eighth and ninth innings. Jordan Cooperpitched two scoreless innings of middle relief for State College, giving up two hits and a walk while notching the Spikes' first strikeout of the game.

Carpenter took the loss for the Renegades after allowing both Spikes runs on a total of three hits while striking out four batters. Hudson Valley starter Trevor Shull did not receive a decision, but limited State College to one hit, one walk and one hit batsman over his five innings of work. The right-hander also struck out six and lowered his ERA in the New York-Penn League from 10.38 to 6.59 in the effort.

Church went 3-for-3 with the Renegades' lone RBI, while NYPL All-Star Matt Rice collected two hits for Hudson Valley.

Thursday, the Spikes and Renegades play the second game of their three-game set at Duchess Stadium with a scheduled 7:05 p.m. start. State College will have right-hander Trent Stevenson (0-1) on the mound, while Hudson Valley will go with right-hander Andrew Bellatti (2-4).
