Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, CT - After getting crushed 7-1 in the opening game of the doubleheader, the Connecticut Tigers came from behind to take down the Staten Island Yankees 7-6 in the nightcap on Wednesday night at Dodd Stadium.
The Yankees blew game one open early with a six-run second innings. After Tigers starter Luis Sanz set down the side in order in the first, he served up six runs on six hits in the second. Staten Island sent 12 men to the plate in the second. However, because of a Javier Azcona error that started that second frame, all six runs scored were unearned by Sanz.
Sanz ended up going the distance for his second complete game of the year, but the seven runs he gave up was a season-high, as he suffered his fourth loss of the season.
Eugenio Suarez drove in the lone run of the game for the Tigers with an RBI single in the fifth to score Azcona, who started the frame with a double.
The Yankees were the home team in game two, as it was a makeup from a game rained out in Staten Island earlier in the season. In game two the Yankees jumped on top early with a run in the first inning. Mason Williams led off with a single and two batters later he was driven in on a Ben Gamel RBI double.
Connecticut came back to put four runs on the board in the fourth. Suarez blasted his fourth home run of the year, a three-run shot, while Tyler Collins added an RBI single to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.
However, the Yankees would strike back with five runs in their half of the fourth on just one hit.
Staten Island was aided in the inning by two walks, a hit by pitch and two errors.
Connecticut scored a run in the sixth on a Collins sacrifice fly cutting the deficit to 6-5.
Dean Green then led off the seventh inning with a base hit into right field. P.J. Polk entered the game to pinch run for Green. After Jeff Holm struck out, Matt Perry drew a walk to move Polk up to second. Patrick Leyland then slapped an RBI single into left to tie the game at six.
With the game still tied at six going into the ninth inning, which was extra innings because of the seven-inning games during doubleheaders, Leyland smashed his first homer of the year in the most opportune time, a solo shot that gave the Tigers a 7-6 victory.
Rayni Guichardo, who came out of the pen to throw three one-hit innings, earned the win, while Jeff Barfield came in to shut the door on the Yankees in the ninth to pick up his second save.
The Tigers will continue the four-game series with the Yankees tomorrow night at Dodd. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
