Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Auburn, NY - The Aberdeen IronBirds let an early two-run lead slip away Wednesday night as they fell at the Auburn Doubledays 4-2.
The IronBirds jumped on the scoreboard in the first. Glynn Davis beat-out an infield single to start off the game. After stealing second base, Davis advanced to third on a ground-out to second base. He scored on a wild pitch, making it 1-0.
Aberdeen tacked on a second run in the third inning. With one man out, Davis worked a walk. He once again stole second base. Mychal Givens knocked him in on a two-out bloop single to right-field.
Auburn cut into the deficit in the fifth inning. With one man out, IronBirds starting pitcher Tyler Wilson walked Justin Miller and hit Billy Burns with a pitch. A batter later, Caleb Ramsey knocked in Miller with an RBI-single.
Wilson would exit the game after the fifth. The 10th-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in this year's draft allowed just the one run on two hits in five innings of work. He walked one and struck-out three batters.
The Doubledays tied the game up in the sixth. Matt Skole singled to lead-off the frame. After advancing to second on a passed ball, Skole moved to third on a ground-out to second. Russell Moldenhauer lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center, scoring Skole, and tying the ball game at two.
Auburn would take its first lead of the game in the seventh. Miller led-off with a double. Burns reached on a bunt single and then stole second, putting runners at second and third. With one down, the IronBirds elected to intentionally walk Ramsey, loading the bases for Bryce Ortega. He singled to right-field. Miller scored. Kyle Hoppy's throw home was wild, allowing Burns to score as well.
Christian Garcia (1-0) picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Devin Jones (1-3) was credited with the loss. Aaron Barrett (6) pitched the final two innings for his sixth save of the season.
The IronBirds and the Doubledays will meet in game two of this three-game series Thursday evening at Falcon Park. Aberdeen will have former first-round pick Matt Hobgood (0-4, 12.23) on the hill. He'll go up against fellow right-hander Wirkin Estevez (4-2, 3.86). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
The Aberdeen IronBirds sold out season tickets for the 10thstraight season. Group packages and single-game tickets, however, are still available for the 2011 season. For ticket information, contact our box office at (410) 297-9292 or visit us online at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com.
