Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - A pinch-hit single by Jordy Mercer in the bottom of the seventh inning brought home two runs to break a, 3-3, tie and send the Curve to its second straight victory over Richmond, 5-3, on Sunday night at Blair County Ballpark. Michael Dubee (4-2) earned the win in relief for Altoona while Diego Moreno pitched the final two innings for his second save of the year.
With the game tied at three entering the bottom of the seventh, Squirrels reliever Mitch Lively allowed a leadoff single by Hector Gimenez to start the inning. After Matt Hague flew out to right field, Miles Durham singled to put runners at first and second with one away. Brandon Jones grounded to first to move the runners to second and third before Mercer stepped to the plate and singled to left off the new Richmond pitcher Ronnie Ray.
Starter Justin Wilson pitched the first 5.1 innings for the Curve and allowed three runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Altoona broke a 1-1 tie earlier in the game in the bottom of the fifth when Jones singled home the go-ahead run. His RBI hit was followed by Shelby Ford's RBI single and the Curve led, 3-1.
Richmond answered in the sixth with one down when Thomas Neal and Conor Gillaspie singled to put runners at the corners for the Squirrels. Clay Timpner singled back through the middle to pull Richmond closer at, 3-2. After Wilson walked catcher Tyler La Torre to load the bases, Dubee was called in to get out of a tough spot but allowed an RBI fielder's choice to Sharlon Schoop to tie the game.
Jones, Ford, Josh Harrison and Yung-Chi Chen all had two hits apiece in the win for Altoona, who had 11 hits total in the game. Moreno struck out three batters in his two innings of work.
Winners of two straight, the Curve (55-34), will look for a series win in the homestand finale on Monday at 12 p.m. versus the Flying Squirrels (42-48). RHP Tim Alderson (7-5, 5.30) will look to lead the Curve to a victory in the final game before the All-Star Break while RHP Craig Westcott (0-1, 3.27) gets the starting nod for Richmond.
