Thunder Fall Behind Early, Lose Fifth Straight
July 11, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release
Bowie, MD- A ninth inning comeback fell short, as Joe Mahoney caught a line drive off the bat of Justin Snyder and then doubled up Rene Rivera at first base to secure a 9-7 win for Bowie over the Thunder on Sunday night at Prince George's Stadium. With the loss, Trenton falls to 52-37 on the year.
LHP Wilkin de la Rosa fell into trouble early, giving up five runs in the first two innings on six hits, including an RBI double by Ryan Adams, who finished the night with four hits. The Thunder answered back in the bottom of the second inning with two runs scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Cusick and an RBI single by Justin Christian to cut Bowie's lead to 5-2 at the end of two innings.
The Thunder were able to tie the game up in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on three hits off RHP Ryohei Tanaka. The scoring was capped off by a two-run triple from Christian to knot up the game at 5-5. However, the tie did not last long, as Bowie scored four runs off George Kontos (0-1) over the next three innings to move in front 9-5. Bowie hitters knocked seven of their 16 hits in the game off Kontos.
Justin Snyder walked with one out in the eighth inning off Trenton native James Hoey and would be driven in on an RBI single to right field by Matt Cusick to cut the deficit to 9-6. Daniel Brewer led off the top of the ninth inning with a single to right field and came around to score on an RBI double by Jack Rye to cut the score to 9-7. With Rye on second and Rene Rivera at first, the go-ahead run in Snyder hit a line drive to first base, but Mahoney robbed the hitter to start the double play that ended the game.
The Thunder also recorded 16 hits on the night, with Luis Nunez and Edwar Gonzalez both picking up three hits each. Trenton has now matched a season high five game losing streak.
Trenton and Bowie will conclude their series and the first half of play on Monday morning at 11:05 AM. RHP Lance Pendleton takes the mound for Trenton, and Bowie will start LHP Nate Nery. Catch all the action on 107.7 FM The Bronc, or online at trentonthunder.com.
