Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves snapped a two-game losing skid on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park, knocking off the Akron Aeros 5-1. The win snapped a six-game losing streak to the Aeros.

The 'Wolves struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning against Akron starter Scott Barnes. Audy Ciriaco tripled off the wall in left-center and came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Rawley Bishop for a 1-0 lead.

The Aeros tied the game against Erie starter Charlie Furbush in the sixth. Tim Fedroff led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout by Damaso Espino. Fedroff would come home to score on a sacrifice fly by Cristo Arnal, tying the game at 1-1.

Furbush ran into trouble in the seventh when he hit Jason Kipnis and gave up back-to-back singles to John Drennen and Matt McBride loading the bases. Erie got out of the jam as Furbush induced a fly ball to shallow left and reliever Zach Simons got an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play, keeping the game tied.

In the bottom of the eighth, Kody Kaiser led off with a double against Akron reliever Connor Graham. Alden Carrithers walked with one out putting two on for Andy Dirks. Dirks grounded to the first baseman Beau Mills and Mills booted the ball allowing all three baserunners to reach safely. Cale Iorg followed and hit into a fielders choice, scoring Kaiser, giving the 'Wolves a 2-1 lead. Ciriaco followed with his fourth hit of the game, a bases clearing triple for a 4-1 Erie advantage. Ciriaco would come home on a Michael Bertram base hit to left for a 5-1 lead.

Matt Hoffman came into the game in the ninth and shut down the side in order with two strikeouts, locking down the win.

Simons (2-3) picked up the win going 1.2 scoreless, hitless innings.

Furbush took a no-decision going 6.1 innings, allowing a run on four hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. He held the Aeros hitless for the first four innings of the game and six of his nine punchouts came in the first three innings.

Erie looks for a series split on Monday night at Jerry Uht Park. Righty Thad Weber (5-9, 4.05 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves looking for his second consecutive win against lefty Eric Berger (4-4, 4.74 ERA).

Monday night will be the second of four July Buck Nights. Monday night's Buck Night theme is Mustache Mania! Where we will celebrate the best.and worst, of upper lip hair.
