Walks Plague B-Mets in 8-6 Loss to Fisher Cats

Binghamton hurlers combined to walk eight New Hampshire hitters, including five in the Fisher Cats' six-run fourth inning, resulting in an 8-6 loss at NYSEG Stadium Sunday afternoon. Kirk Nieuwenhuis extended his season-long hitting streak to nine games with a double and a homer in five trips to pace the B-Mets offense.

Binghamton (48-42) took an early lead against right-hander B.J. LaMura in the second inning. With one out, Mike Nickeas teed off on a 3-2 fastball from the starter, sending it over the wall in left-center for his third homer of the season. Two batters later, Michael Fisher ripped his first homer in a B-Mets uniform, a solo blast to right, making it 2-0.

New Hampshire (54-36) responded in a big way in the fourth. Adam Loewen chopped a single into right to reach against starter Mark Cohoon. After Jonathan Jaspe struck out, Matt Liuzza laced an RBI double to the gap in left, cutting the lead in half, 2-1. Cohoon proceeded to walk Jonathan Diaz, leading to Darin Mastroianni, who had already doubled twice off the left-hander. Mastroianni punished Cohoon again with a double down the third-base line, chasing Liuzza and Diaz home to give the Fisher Cats a 3-2 lead.

Adeiny Hechavarria kept the rally going with an RBI single to center, forcing Cohoon from the game. Roy Merritt followed and walked four straight hitters, pushing two more runs across to up New Hampshire's lead to 6-2. Cohoon was charged with five runs on six hits over a season-low 3 2/3 innings and took the loss.

Marshall Hubbard issued a response in the fifth. With Nieuwenhuis in scoring position following a leadoff double, Hubbard smacked a two-out, two-run shot to right, trimming the lead to two. It was Hubbard's sixth homer and first since May 22.

LaMura departed to the win, his third, after the fifth. The New York native allowed four runs on six hits over five innings.

The Fisher Cats got a run back in the sixth courtesy of an Adam Loewen RBI single off Emary Frederick, plating Eric Thames, who had doubled earlier in the frame, upping the lead to three.

The B-Mets rallied to within a run in the seventh. Nieuwenhuis ripped a line-drive bomb to right off reliever Ronald Uviedo with the bases empty and one out to get Binghamton within two. Uviedo exited after allowing the next two to reach on an error and a single. Danny Farquhar replaced him and promptly hit the Hubbard to load the bases. Josh Satin followed with an RBI bloop single to right, moving Binghamton with a run. However, with the bases loaded and one out, Raul Reyes hit into an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play to end the threat.

Thames added a home run in the eighth off Eddie Kunz, his 15th, providing the final margin of 8-6. Kunz retired every hitter he faced over three innings with the exception of Thames.

Tim Collins nailed down his ninth save in 10 chances for the Fisher Cats with a 1-2-3 ninth.

The B-Mets look to split the series in the finale Monday at 1:05 PM. RHP Chris Schwinden (4-5, 4.65) starts for Binghamton against RHP Randy Boone (2-4, 3.67) of New Hampshire. The radio broadcast on ESPN 1360 WYOS begins at 12:50 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
