Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds (16-6) got home runs from Oscar Mercado and Carson Kelly but could not capitalize in a 5-4 loss to the Round Rock Express (Rangers) Friday night at AutoZone Park.
The duo clubbed their homers in the fifth inning to account for the Redbirds' scoring on the night. Mercado's three-run shot was his fourth of the season and came after Wilfredo Tovar singled and Randy Arozarena was hit by a pitch. Kelly followed two batters later with his second of the year.
Memphis trailed 4-0 before the long balls in the fifth, and Round Rock re-took the lead in the seventh with a home run off Ryan Sherriff, who joined the team for a Major League injury rehab assignment. Round Rock pitching set down the final 10 Redbirds of the game after Memphis got two on with two outs in the sixth.
Dakota Hudson struck out five in 6.0 innings, and he gave up two earned runs, four total, on eight hits. Sherriff took the loss after the home run in the seventh, and Edward Mujica pitched the final 2.0 innings and struck out three.
Max Schrock was 2-for-4 in the game, and Tovar was also 2-for-4 with a run scored. Patrick Wisdom was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
The Redbirds committed two errors in the ballgame and were 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The Express won despite going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and leaving 10 on base.
The Redbirds and the Express face off twice more tomorrow at 6:35 and Sunday at 2:05. After Sunday's series finale, Memphis does battle with Oklahoma City Monday-Thursday. For more information on single-game tickets and ticket mini-memberships, visit www.memphisredbirds.com/tickets.
