Megna Tallies Two in Loss to Bears
November 16, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
HERSHEY, Pa. - For the second straight night the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins jumped out to a 2-0 lead on their opponents.
And for the second straight night, they saw the lead slip away, as the Hershey Bears tallied three unanswered goals to post a 3-2 win on Sunday at the Giant Center.
The loss was the second in a row for the first place Penguins (9-7-1-0, 19 points), who now lead the Bears (8-6-1-0, 17 points) by just two points in the East Division standings.
Despite being outshot 12-4 in the opening frame, it was the Penguins who entered the first intermission with the 1-0 lead.
Jayson Megna wristed a shot through traffic at the 11:14 mark that beat Philippe Grubauer, giving Megna his seventh goal of the season and the Pens the early lead.
The third-year pro wasn't done, though, as he intercepted a pass in the first minute of the second period and beat Grubauer on the breakaway 38 seconds into the frame to give the Pens a 2-0 lead.
It was the second two-goal game against the Bears in a nine-day span for Megna, and the third multi-goal game this month. Megna now leads the Pens with eight goals on the season, just one shy of his single-season AHL high, set in 25 games last year.
Philippe Cornet got the Bears on the board four minutes later, tallying 12 seconds into a Jean-Sebastien Dea delay of game penalty for his fourth goal of the year.
The Penguins had a chance to regain the two-goal cushion just 32 seconds later, but Josh Archibald could not convert on a penalty shot attempt he received for being hauled down in the Hershey zone.
Connor Carrick evened the score at the 16:44 mark with the Bears' second power play goal of the afternoon, this time due to a Jeff Zatkoff tripping penalty.
It looked like the teams would go to the second break deadlocked, but Scott Harrington brought down Chandler Stephenson en route to the Pens goal, and the Bears' center was awarded a penalty shot attempt. His wrister deflected off of Zatkoff's blocker and found the back of the net with 24 seconds left in the middle frame for what was the eventual game-winner.
Zatkoff made 32 saves in defeat, while Grubauer stopped 16 of 18 to pick up the victory.
Individual tickets for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena Box Office, online at TicketMaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000.
