MECHANICS ARE PERFECT AT HOME IN 2006: RECLAIM THIRD PLACE IN CENTRAL DIVISION
- 1/6: MECHANICS FACE THE DANBURY TRASHERS FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS SEASON
Motor city got on the board first when Brent Gretzky beat the Trashers goaltender to make it 1-0 early into the game. That score would hold till the second period when the Trashers scored twice to take the lead at 2-1. The Mechanics didn't panic and stuck to the game plan and reeled off three straight goals, including two shorthanded goals just 36 seconds apart. Scott Dobben and Kris Vernarsky were the goal scorers. Vernarsky in the process of netting his shorthanded goal tied a Mechanics record held previously by Joe Burton who tallied 3 SHG's in the 2004-05 season.
Matt Smith tallied an insurance goal on the power play late in the second to make it 4-2. That score would hold up as Rod Branch, who made his 28th start in net, made 35 saves for his 16th win of the season.
Two Mechanics tallied multiple point nights, Brent Gretzky (1g, 1a) and Adam Edinger (2a).
- KRIS VERNARSKY TIED A MECHANICS RECORD OF 3 SHORTHANDED GOALS DURING A SEASON; JOE BURTON TALLIED 3 SHG'S IN THE 2004-05 SEASON.
- MATT SMITH SCORED HIS LEAGUE LEADING 7TH POWER PLAY GOAL.
- 1/7: MECHANICS RETURN TO PORT HURON FOR THE SECOND TIME WITHIN NINE DAYS
Greg Bullock scored the games first goal midway through the first period; Mike Burgoyne and Kevin Hansen tallied the assists. Port Huron would respond with one of their own to tie heading into the intermission and then went on to score three more goals to take a 4-1 lead. The Mechanics cut the lead to two when Chris Gignac scored with just under four minutes to play in the second period. Midway through the third period, Greg Bullock scored again to cut the lead to one at 4-3 but the Flags shutdown every Mechanic opportunity from there on out and held on for the win.
On December 30th the Mechanics shutout the Flags 3-0. That shutout was the first in Flags history.
Chris Bogas was the only other Mechanic that tallied multiple points (2a). Rod Branch made his 29th start in net and made 21 saves in the loss.
- GREG BULLOCK SCORED HIS 200TH PRO GOAL WHEN HE SCORED HIS SECOND GOAL.
- 1/8: FLINT AND MOTOR CITY BATTLE TO THE END WITH THE MECHANICS SCORING A LATE GOAL TO WIN
The last time the Generals came to the "Garage," fans saw what could have been the best game, up until now. Both teams are fighting for positioning in the Central Division and it showed. The Mechanics started the game scoring the first two goals. The Generals then responded with two of their own. However, the Mechanics reeled off three straight goals only to see the Generals respond with three of their own to tie the game at 5-5. Mike Burgoyne, who had a career night, (I'll explain later) scored the game-winning goal on the power play with under one minute to play in the game. Adam Edinger then tallied an empty net goal to ice the game.
Now onto Mike Burgoyne; He started his journey on the power play in the first period. He ripped a shot beating Flint Goaltender, Peter Brady, GOAL ONE. He then assisted on two of the Mechanics second period goals, ASSISTS ONE AND TWO. In the third period, Burgoyne again scored on the power play, GOAL TWO, and of course he tallied the game winning goal on the power play with 43 seconds left, GOAL THREE...I think they call that a HAT-TRICK!! The second Mechanic to record a hat-trick this season; Adam Edinger scored four goals at Muskegon on December 9th.
Bill Ruggiero got the rare start in net; his 6th game played of the season, and made 29 saves for his 2nd win.
- MIKE BURGOYNES HAT-TRICK WAS HIS FIRST OF HIS PRO CAREER; THE LAST TIME HE NETTED THREE GOALS IN A GAME WAS AT THE AGE OF 10 WHEN HE WAS PLAYING FORWARD.
- THE MECHANICS WIN GIVES HEAD COACH DANTON COLE 200 WINS IN HIS COACHING CAREER.
- BURGOYNE'S FIVE POINT NIGHT TIED HIM WITH FOUR OTHER MECHANICS FOR MOST POINTS IN A GAME, BRYAN SMOLINSKI (TWICE), CHRIS CHELIOS, JEFF DOYLE AND SEAN AVERY ALL TALLIED FIVE POINTS DURING THE 2004-05 SEASON.
- BURGOYNE TIED DAIVD BONK FOR FIRST ON THE MECHANICS ROOKIE GOAL SCORING LIST WITH 15.
