Jason Tapp denied all five Rockford shooters to earn the shootout victory.
Friday, January 6th-Quad City 4 at Rockford 5
For the second straight game, the Mallards outscored Rockford 2-0 in the third period, but on Friday night it wasn't enough as the Hogs held on to defeat the Mallards 5-4. After heading into the second period tied at two, the Hogs dominated play in the second as they scored three times. Quad City struck back in the third with a pair of goals to create an exciting finish. Matt Radoslovich, Anthony Blumer, Tom Clayton and Tom Galvin scored for the Mallards in the loss. A wild and wooly first period ended with the game tied at two. Mallard Matt Radoslovich opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the year scored off of a goal-mouth scramble. Rockford's Greg Barber tipped home a power-play point shot by Preston Mizzi to tie the game at one. The Mallards retook the lead on a goal by Anthony Blumer at 16:47 of the opening period. Blumer's 12th marker ranks him second on the Mallards roster in goals. The Hogs closed the first period with a power-play marker by Robin Big Snake. The Rockford agitator's tally was his team-leading 16th goal of the year. In the second, the Hogs seized control of the game with three unanswered goals. Steve Yetman scored a four-on-four goal just 70 seconds into the period. Yetman would strike again with the teams skating at full strength with 7:28 gone in the second. Preston Mizzi added Rockford's third power-play goal of the night at 14:24 of the second to give the Hogs a 5-2 lead after two. In the third, the Mallards staged a strong comeback that came up just one goal short. Tom Clayton converted on the power play at 10:46 of the period to pull the Mallards within two goals. At 15:51 of final frame, Tom Galvin netted his third goal of the year to set up a furious finish. With the Mallards trailing by one, the team created several solid scoring chances in the closing minutes but could not beat Rockford's Ron Vogel for the equalizer.
Saturday, January 7th-Quad City 0 at Fort Wayne 3
The Mallards ended a four-game road trip on Saturday night in Fort Wayne with a 3-0 loss to the Komets. The loss marks the first time this year that the Mallards were held scoreless. Kevin St. Pierre earned his second whitewashing of the season in the win. The teams skated scoreless in the opening frame as Quad City's Jason Tapp and Fort Wayne's Kevin St. Pierre were solid between the pipes. Tapp made six stops in the first period including great chances by Colin Chaulk and Lance Galbraith. In the second, Guy Dupuis scored twice for Fort Wayne to give the Komets a 2-0 edge after 40 minutes. Dupuis' first marker came at even strength with 2:07 gone in the period. Sunday, January 8th-Rockford 1 at Quad City 2 - Shootout
An entertaining Sunday afternoon affair ended with the Mallards beating Rockford 2-1 in a shootout at The MARK. After the teams traded first period goals, the final two periods were scoreless before a goaltender dominated shootout was won 1-0 by Quad City. Jason Tapp made 29 saves in the win to earn first start honors. In the first period, Chad Woollard converted on a Mallards power-play to put Quad City up 1-0. Woollard's point shot rocketed through traffic before sailing past Rockford netminder Ron Vogel. The goal was Woollard's team-leading 20th of the season. Rockford responded with an even strength marker off a face-off win. Chaz Johnson fired a shot from the slot over Tapp's shoulder to tie the game at one. The first period also featured excellent goaltending as Tapp and Vogel combined to stop 27 shots. In the second, the teams combined for nine power play opportunities. Both netminders continued to hold their ground as they kept the game even at one heading into the third. The Mallards outshot the Hogs 11-5 in the final frame, but because neither team could capitalize on their chances, the teams headed to a shootout. In the shootout, Tapp stonewalled all five Rockford shooters to earn his 14th win. Glenn Detulleo scored in round two for the Mallards as they improve to 16-14-5 on the year.
