Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - Daniel McGrath outdueled Casey Mize with seven shutout innings and the Sea Dogs (23-22) shutout the Erie SeaWolves (33-13) 1-0 in front of 6,433 on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. Portland has now won six of their last seven.
McGrath (W, 4-0) allowed just three hits while walking two and matching a career-high with nine strikeouts. The Australian lefty lowered his ERA to 1.34 and has now allowed just one earned run over his last 59.0 innings pitched.
Mize (L, 6-2) was nearly as good as McGrath. Last year's first overall pick allowed one run on five hits over six innings while walking one and striking out seven.
Portland scored the game's lone run off of Mize in the second inning. After back-to-back singles by Luke Tendler and Michael Osinski, Brett Netzer hit a fly ball to left and Cam Gibson made a diving catch, but Tendler came home to score on the play.
Erie had their best chance in the second against McGrath when Josh Lester led off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball, then Daniel Pinero walked to put runners on the corners with nobody out. But McGrath picked off Pinero at first base then struck out Gibson and induced a groundout from Sergio Alcantara to end the SeaWolves threat.
The Sea Dogs picked up a crucial insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a sac fly by Osinski to drive in Joey Curletta.
Eduard Bazardo pitched a scoreless eighth and struck out the side. Dedgar Jimenez (SV, 4) closed out the game with a perfect ninth. Portland pitchers combined to strike out 13 SeaWolves.
The three-game series continues on Wednesday night with a 7:00 PM first pitch from Hadlock Field. LHP Matthew Kent (5-3, 2.92) makes his 17th appearance of the season against Erie's LHP Tarik Skubal (0-1, 2.25).
Radio coverage on the WPEI U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network begins at 6:45 PM. The game is available on the tune-in app and MiLB.TV.
