(READING, PA) - Darick Hall reached base three times, helping boost Reading to a 5-4 win over the Hartford Yard Goats in the series opener on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Reading (29-18) (68-46) maintains a five-game lead in the Eastern Division, with just 26 remaining in the regular season.
Julian Garcia (1-0) hurled a perfect first in his home debut, before the Yard Goats (19-25) (56-55) jumped ahead with three in the top of the second.
Alan Trejo collected a one-out single, and with two down, Brian Serven worked a walk. On a payoff pitch, Bret Boswell lifted a three-run home run to right-center to put Hartford up 3-0.
Reading rallied to overtake Hartford in the third.
Henri Lartigue opened with a double to right off Hartford starter Heath Holder (6-4), and Garcia drew a walk. Luke Williams followed by striking a double to left, scoring Lartigue with the Fightins first run. Mickey Moniak then ripped a double of his own to right, plating both Garcia and Williams to tie the ballgame at three.
With one down, Darick Hall drew a walk, and Jose Gomez walked with two outs to load the bases. Matt Whitehouse entered in relief, and Aqruimedes Gamboa blooped a double into right that plated two more to put Reading on top, 5-3.
Boswell struck again to pull Hartford to within one in the fourth. With two down, Boswell drove a deep double to center to bring in Serven on his fourth RBI of the night, making it a 5-4 game.
Garcia struck out seven in the start, working five innings and permitting four runs on six hits and a walk.
Jonathan Hennigan tossed two scoreless in relief, and Jakob Hernandez finished off the final two frames to earn his third save.
