McCall's Hit Helps 'Cats Top Cyclones 4-2
August 31, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - Dexture McCall hit a two-run, go-ahead single, and Matt Bower struck out two batters in his New York-Penn League debut, as the Tri-City ValleyCats topped the Brooklyn Cyclones by the score of 4-2, in front of a sell-out crowd of 4,778 fans at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, on Monday night.
After the 'Cats beat the Cyclones 13-4 on Sunday, Monday's contest was much more of a pitching duel. After Brooklyn took a 1-0 lead after scoring in the top of the first inning, neither team pushed a run across until the bottom of the sixth.
Brooks Marlow started Tri-City's offense in that frame with a one-out single, before Aaron Mizell walked, and Bobby Wernes singled to load the bases.
That brought up McCall, who hit the first pitch he saw from Cyclones reliever Johnny Magliozzi up the middle to drive home Marlow and Mizell, and give the 'Cats the lead.
One batter later, Wernes came home on a wild pitch, as Tri-City entered the seventh inning up 3-1.
After the Cyclones scored once in the top of the seventh, Mizell brought home Keach Ballard with a single to center field, pushing the 'Cats lead to 4-2.
The RBI hit by Mizell capped a stellar day for the native of McRae, Ga., who also tripled and stole a base.
The three-bagger, which came in the bottom of the fourth inning, was his seventh triple with the ValleyCats, setting a career, and single-season team record.
Earning the win for Tri-City was Bower, who pitched four innings of relief, while allowing only one run. It was his first appearance with the 'Cats after getting promoted from Rookie-Level Greeneville on August 25.
Zac Grotz got the save, striking out two batters in a scoreless ninth frame.
The ValleyCats will now attempt to go for a series sweep against the Cyclones on Tuesday, in the final game of this three-game set. On the mound for Tri-City will be LHP Alex Winkelman (5-0, 2.94), with RHP Raul Jacobson (0-0, 0.00) getting the start for Brooklyn.
