Kolten Mahoney Shuts Down Tigers

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (31-34) have now lost the first two games of a three game set with the Staten Island Yankees (36-32) as they lost 6-2 on Monday night. The Yankees have won the first five games of the season series between the teams and go for the season sweep tomorrow.

Sandy Baez (3-4) was sharp through the first two innings for Connecticut but ran into trouble in the third. Catcher Eduardo de Oleo (2-3, BB) started the scoring with a home run, his third of the year. Still in the third and with two-outs the Yankees had runners on first and second for third basemen Brandon Wagner (1-4, RBI) and singled in centerfielder Jeff Hendrix (1-4) while also scoring on the play was right fielder Trey Amburgey (1-3, 2 R) who scored on a throwing error making it 3-0.

Staten Island added two more runs in the fourth. One on another leadoff home run this time from second basemen Junior Valera, his first, and another on an RBI single by leftfielder Zack Zehner (4-5, RBI, 2B). The Yankees added another run in the fifth off of Locke St. John to lead 6-0.

The Tigers attempted to mount a comeback as they scored single runs in the seventh and eighth against Yankees reliever Travis Hissong. Catcher Tyler Servais (1-4, RBI) drove in his first professional run in the seventh and first basemen Will Allen (2-4, RBI, HBP) plated his 26th RBI of the year in the eighth to get the Tigers within 6-2.

Baez after a string of excellent starts allowed five runs, four earned in three and two thirds innings of work. He struck out five and walked just one. Locke St. John was very sharp in relief going four and a third innings giving up six hits and just the single run while striking out five and walking none.

Kolton Mahoney (3-2) started the game and was brilliant for Staten Island working the first seven innings allowing just four hits and one run. He struck out six and hit a batter. Hissong went the final two innings for the Yankees.

Connecticut will play the final game of a three game series at Staten Island on Tuesday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
