Cutters Crowned Pinckney Division Champs at Home
August 31, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Williamsport Crosscutters clinched their first Pinckney Division Championship since the 2001 season with a 12-2 win against the Auburn Doubledays on Monday night at Susquehanna Bank Park. The Cutters got some help from Batavia as they held onto beat West Virginia 5-4 at home. Williamsport will make their first playoff appearance in 10 years as the 2005 squad was the last to do so.
Luis Morales made arguably his biggest start of the season for Williamsport in his first game back from the disabled list. Morales looked strong in the early going as he was in search of his first win in 2015. Morales would see the Doubledays plate a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Cutters offense had Morales' back as they rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game 2-2 and then would take a 4-2 lead.
Jan Hernandez delivered the first big hit of the night for the Cutters with a pair of runners on base and two outs. Hernandez scored both Venn Biter and Josh Tobias with his eighth double of the year to tie the game. Carlos Duran would follow suit driving in Hernandez from third base with a single to make it 3-2 Williamsport. Austin Bossart would join in on the fun as his single coupled with a fielding error allowed Duran to score to make it 4-2.
Williamsport kept their foot on the gas pedal as they scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 8-2 lead over Auburn. Hernandez would pick up his third RBI of the night with a triple to deep centerfield. Duran and Bossart also chipped in with RBI hits to fuel the Cutters offense. Before the night was over, Williamsport would add two more runs in the seventh and two in the eighth inning to take a 12-2 lead. The 12 runs scored by the Cutters sets a new season high as Williamsport scored 10 against Connecticut earlier this year. The 44 wins ties the total from the 2005 squad, which was also the last to earn a playoff berth in the NYPL.
