Staten Island Yankees News Release

After taking the series opener on Sunday night, the Staten Island Yankees (36-32) claimed the series from the Connecticut Tigers (31-34) with a 6-2 victory.

Kolton Mahoney (W, 3-2) set the tone for Staten Island on the mound, tossing seven innings, allowing only one run on four hits, striking out six batters.

The Yankees backed Mahoney up with the offense, scoring three runs in the third inning. Eduardo de Oleo led off the inning with a solo home run, his third of the season. After Kyle Holder struck out, Zack Zehner doubled to center field, but was thrown out at home trying to score on a Jeff Hendrix single. Following Hendrix's base hit, Trey Amburgey drew a walk then both runners came home to score on a Ryan Krill single, making the score 3-0.

Staten Island added more runs in the fourth inning. Junior Valera led off the inning with his first home run of the season. Kyle Holder reached later in the inning on a fielder's choice, stole second base, then scored on a Ryan Krill single, giving the Yankees a 5-0 lead.

The Yankees added one last run in the fifth inning. Amburgey singled to right and later scored on a Valera double to left field, giving the Baby Bombers all the runs they needed.

Connecticut plated a run in both the seventh and eighth innings, but the late rally fell short as Staten Island claimed the victory, 6-2.

The two teams wrap up the series Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
