Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - After a five-run fourth inning that saw the Spinners climb back within a run, the Hudson Valley Renegades put up five runs of their own in the fifth to put the game out of reach, handing the Spinners a 12-6 loss Monday night at LeLacheur Park.
The loss puts the Spinners playoff hopes on life-support.
Hudson Valley (36-32) jumped out to a quick lead in the second inning on a two-run single by Joseph Astacio to take a 2-0 lead.
The Renegades padded their lead in the second inning and chased Lowell starter Javier Rodriguez in the process in taking a 6-0 lead. A one-out double by Oscar Sanay got things started. After a hit-batter, a fielding error by Mitch Gunsolus loaded the bases and Angel Moreno promptly unloaded them with a two-run double. A single by Hector Montes scored another before Rodriguez's own error plated another and brought Daniel Gonzalez out of the bullpen and he got out of the remainder of the inning unscathed.
Lowell (34-35) got back in the game in the fourth inning. A one-out double by Kyri Washington got the scoring started and back-to-back singles by Austin Rei and Tate Matheny made it a 6-3 game. An error on Alixon Suarez's chopped scored Rei, while and error by the right-fielder, backing up the play, put a pair of Spinners in scoring position. A Jeremy Rivera single scored Matheny before a pitching change resulted in a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning with the Spinners down a run.
Hudson Valley answered quickly and with authority, scoring five runs in the fifth, all unearned. After an error by Gunsolus to lead off the inning, a walk and another error, this time by Josh Ockimey, plated a run to push the lead to 7-5. A two-run triple by Michael Russell made it 9-5, before a sacrifice fly and back-to-back doubles extended the Renegades lead to 11-5.
The two teams traded runs in the bottom of the seventh and top of the eighth before first baseman Tucker Tubbs came out of the bullpen for the Spinners in the ninth, working around three base hits to pitch a scoreless inning in his pitching debut.
Washington had a three-hit game while De La Guerra had a pair. Rodriguez (0-5, 6.88) was charged with the loss, while Gonzalez followed with 3.1 innings of relief, allowing five runs (none earned) on five hits and a walk. Taylor Nunez allowed one run in 3.1 innings while Tubbs struck out one in his scoreless ninth.
The Spinners look to salvage a win from the three game series when Dioscar Romero gets the ball for a 7:05pm first pitch on Uncut Card Sheet Giveaway.
