Portland Sea Dogs News Release
SPLIT THE TWIN BILL The Portland Sea Dogs split the twin bill with the Reading Fightin Phils on Saturday afternoon. Portland dropped game one, 13-4 before taking game two, 2-1. With the game two win, Portland secured a series win over Reading. In game one, Portland got on the board with an RBI triple off the bat of Alex Binelas (2). With his second in as many days, Portland led 1-0. Matt Donlan hit an RBI single to score Binelas before an RBI double from Roman Anthony (4) scored Donlan for the third run of the inning. Reading countered with five runs in the bottom of the third after sending ten to the plate. The inning was highlighted by a solo homer off the bat of William Simoneit along with a pair of RBI singles for Jose Rodriguez and Marcus Lee Sang. In the top of the fourth, Reading scored four more runs courtesy of a two-run double from Carson Taylor. A balk call would allow Jose Rodriguez to score from third before a sacrifice fly from Bryce Ball would score Taylor to give Reading a 9-3 lead. Moore hit a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the fifth to bring home Reading's tenth run of the day. Matthew Lugo scored a run for Portland in the bottom of the fifth with a double to right field. With his fifth of the season, Portland trailed by six. Reading would add three more runs in the top of the seventh after an RBI single from Rodriguez along with a two-run single for Taylor to take game one, 13-4. In game two, Marcelo Mayer would account for both runs on the day after hitting a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler McDonough reached on a single to center field before Roman Anthony worked a walk. Mayer scored both with a line drive to center field to put Portland on the board, 2-0. Wikelman Gonzalez carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning after striking out eight on the day. Baron Radcliff cut the lead in half with a solo homer to left center field but Portland held on. Ryan Zeferjahn sealed the deal with 2.0 scoreless innings to propel Portland to a 2-1 win.
SCORCHING SERIES FOR BLAZE Blaze Jordan's scorching week has earned him Eastern League Player of the Week honors for the week of April 22nd-28th. Jordan, a first and third baseman for the Sea Dogs, hit .444 (12-for-28) in six games for Portland during the week where he collected four doubles, two home runs, and 8 RBI. Jordan led the league with 22 total bases, 8 RBI, and tied for first with four doubles. He ranked second in average (.444), runs scored (5), slugging percentage (.815), and tied for second with two home runs. He also ranked third in the league in OPS (1.244). It marks the second consecutive week a Sea Dogs player earned Eastern League Player of the Week honors. Sea Dogs' outfielder Matthew Lugo earned the honor last week (April 15th-21st) when he hit .438 with three doubles, a triple, a home run, three runs scored, and 10 RBI. He led the league in doubles (3), RBI (10), Slugging Percentage (.938), and OPS (1.509). He ranked second in the league in walks (five), third in average (.438), and third in OBP (.571). Lugo has hit safely in six straight games. Jordan collected multi-hit games in five of the six last week and has a nine-game hit streak. In 17 games this season, Jordan is hitting .265 with 10 runs scored, six doubles, two home runs, and 13 RBI. The 21-year-old is ranked as the #19 prospect in the Red Sox organization by MLB.com. He was selected by the Red Sox in the third round (89th overall) in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft.
SEA DOGS STREAKS Blaze Jordan is riding a thirteen-game streak while going 21-53 at the plate with nine runs, four doubles, two homers, twleve RBI, four walks, and four strikeouts. Eddinson Paulino is riding an eight-game hit streak of his own after going 11-28 with five doubles, five RBI, six walks, sevens strikeouts, and two stolen bases to tally a .393 average over that span.
POWERFUL PITCHING EARNS PITCHER OF THE MONTH RHP Ryan Zeferjahn earned Red Sox Relief Pitcher of the month accolades after notching a 1-0 record over 11.2 innings in the month of April. Zeferjahn has yet to allow an earned run over six relief appearances to boast a perfect 0.00 ERA. He has held opponents to a .178 average against him while only allowing two walks and striking out nineteen.
PROMISING PROSPECTS IN PORTLAND The top three prospects in Boston's system (according to MLB.com and Baseball America) will begin the season in Portland with Marcelo Mayer (1), Roman Anthony (2), and Kyle Teel (3) headling the Opening Day Roster. In total, the current Sea Dogs roster boasts nine of Boston's Top 30 Prospects according to MLB.com with Wikelman Gonzalez (5), Nick Yorke (6), Blaze Jordan (19), Eddinson Paulino (22), Hunter Dobbins (25), and Angel Bastardo (26) completing thr group.
THIS DAY IN SEA DOGS HISTORY: May 5, 2019 - Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the 'Dogs scored four runs, receiving a game-winning 2-run single from Bobby Dalbec, and beat Binghamton, 4-2 in game one of a doubleheader at Hadlock Field.
PITCHING PREVIEW Isaac Coffey will have the start in the series finale. Coffey last pitched on 4/23 in Hartford against the Yard Goats where he tossed 4.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking four and striking out four. He has faced Reading once this season on 4/10 where he tossed 4.2 innings allowing four runs on four hits while walking one and striking out six. Coffey faced Reading twice in 2023 where he aqquired a 0-1 record over two starts and 4.0 innings . He allowied six runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out six against Reading in 2023.
