Halpin and Akron Walk off Richmond 2-1
May 5, 2024 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Petey Halpin's RBI single gives the Akron RubberDucks the 2-1 walk-off win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park.
Turning Point
After Richmond tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the eighth, Akron looked to send the fans home happy in the ninth. Dayan Frias opened the inning with a single before advancing to second on Micael Ramirez's sac-bunt. After Joe Lampe was hit by a pitch to make it runners at first and second with one out, Halpin singled to right field to score Frias from second and give Akron the 2-1 win.
Mound Presence
Doug Nikhazy got the start for Akron and tossed a scoreless inning before a rain delay ended his first start back off the injured list. Tommy Mace entered for The RubberDucks after the rain and was dominant, not allowing a hit for his first five innings of work. Richmond's was able to tag Mace with a solo home run in the eighth, but the right-hander recovered quickly to set down the next three to end his night at seven innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out four. Bradley Hanner worked a scoreless ninth for Akron.
Duck Tales
Akron's offense was quiet until the fifth when Kahlil Watson opened the inning with a triple down the line in right. Alexfri Planez lifted a sac-fly to right to score Watson and give the RubberDucks the 2-1 lead. Akron threatened for some insurance in the seventh as Halpin singled before Watson worked a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. A caught stealing and flyout allowed Richmond to escape the jam.
