Saturday, May 24, - 7:00 p.m. ET
Boomers Stadium - Schaumburg, IL
Game #8 - Road Game #2 (4-3), (0-1)
RHP #25 Gregory McDaniel (0-0, 11.81 ERA, 2013) vs. LHP #24 Danny Jimenez (0-0, 1.58 ERA)
Last time out...
The Schaumburg Boomers (3-4) used a four-run sixth inning to top the Florence Freedom (4-3) by a final score of 7-6 on Friday night. The big hit in the inning was a Justin Vasquez three-run triple to tie the game. He would later score on a Bobby Martin sacrifice fly. Before the Boomers' big inning, the Freedom had a 6-3 lead as Nick Stein paced them on offense. Stein provided a two-RBI double and a two-run home run to give Florence the lead in the game. Casey Henn settled down after a rough second inning where he gave up three runs to shut down Schaumburg until the sixth. He allowed a couple of hitters to reach base and was replaced by Chris Cummins. Unfortunately Cummins could not get anyone out, walking a batter and giving up the bases clearing triple to Vasquez. Pete Levitt came into the game and surrendered the go-ahead sacrifice fly. Florence did not score again in the defeat.
For Starters...
Gregory McDaniel has spent time in the Pecos League and the Freedom League. He now joins the Florence Freedom for the 2014 season as their 3rd round pick in the 2014 Frontier League Draft. He got released during camp but the Freedom signed him today to fill the injured Chuck Weaver's spot in the rotation. The tall right-hander spent his college career at UNC Charlotte and D2 powerhouse Mount Olive College.
Opposite directions?
Florence won their first four games of the season but have dropped their last three in a row. Meanwhile Schaumburg lost their first four games of the season but have won their last three in a row. Florence went 5-1 in the regular season last year against Schaumburg but got swept in the playoffs.
Power up...
Nick Stein's home run last night was his third of the season, and the Freedom's seventh as a team. Those seven home runs are the most in the Frontier League. The Freedom lead the league in home runs despite going homerless in the Traverse City series.
Swing and a miss...
Florence (60) and Schaumburg (58) have struck out at the plate the two most times in the Frontier League this year.
Double your pleasure...
The Freedom's 16 doubles are tied with the Washington Wild Things for the most in the league. On the other hand, Florence and Joliet are the only teams who have not recorded a triple this season.
Swinging Staley...
Joe Staley is dominating the Frontier League right now. His .520 batting average is second in the league. His 13 hits are tied for second in the league and his four doubles are tied for second as well. Staley has a Slugging Percentage of .920, good for second in the league at the moment behind teammate Nick Stein (1.053).
Tight games...
Three of the Freedom's four wins this season have been in one-run games. Their three losses have been by a combined five runs.
Movin' on up!
Brad Allen was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. Allen becomes the 28th member of the Freedom in franchise history to sign a contract with a MLB organization. The Freedom have had success with former pitchers pitching for the Blue Jays. RHP Steve Delabar pitched for Florence in 2008 and became the first player in Frontier League history to be voted by the fans into the MLB All-Star Game in 2013 as a member of the Blue Jays.
Transaction Wire...
The Freedom signed RHP Gregory McDaniel today.
