Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners scored all of their three runs in the first inning in the series opener with the Lake Erie Crushers on Friday, but the Crushers struck for all four of their runs in the second inning on Saturday night while the Miners offense could not get going in a 4-0 loss.
Miners starter Michael Carden worked around a leadoff single in the first for a scoreless inning, but five consecutive hits, including two doubles, greeted him in the big second inning. That led to three runs, one of which scored when a relay throw was dropped by the catcher, with the final run coming home on a groundout.
Carden settled down in a big way from there, retiring 15 of the final 16 batters he faced before exiting after the sixth with 91 pitches. The new-look bullpen of newcomers Scott Weismann and Jon Levin pitched the final three frames and did not surrender a run.
The Miners offense had runners on base in every inning except the second and sixth, but stranded the bases loaded in the first and for the game hit into five double-plays. Lake Erie used five different pitchers in the contest, walking five as a team, but Southern Illinois could not take advantage.
The Miners and Crushers will play game three of their weekend series on Sunday evening beginning at 5:05 p.m. at Rent One Park. Tyler Lavigne will get the start for Southern Illinois, opposed by Roberto Padilla for Lake Erie.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception. They also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. For ticket information, please contact the Rent One Park box office at 618-998-8499.
