Lake Erie Crushers News Release
MARION, Ill. -- The Lake Erie Crushers induced five double plays at Rent One Park on Saturday evening, and used a big four-run second inning to score a 4-0 victory over the Southern Illinois Miners.
The victory for the Crushers (5-3) marked their first shutout of the season, while the loss for the Miners (2-6) was their third over their last five games at home.
The shutout was a collective effort, as Jose Rosario (1-0), Brad Duffy, Zac Treece, Matt Litzinger and Jason Wilson (1) combined to toss the five hit shutout for the Crushers.
All of the scoring was done in the top of the second inning, which began with five consecutive hits. Ryan Hutchison got things going for the Crushers with a single, and scored on the next play, a double into the left field corner off the bat of Anderson Hidalgo. On the play, Hutchison knocked the ball out of Miners' catcher Jose Gonzalez's glove as he slid into the plate. Gonzalez was charged with an error on the play as the Crushers took a 1-0 lead.
The Lake Erie offense was far from done, as Hidalgo's double was followed by base hits from Emmanuel Quiles, Brian Haggett and Vincent Mejia. Haggett and Mejia went back-to-back with RBI singles to give Lake Erie a 3-0 lead, and Travis Stevens drove in the final run of the inning on a groundout.
The Miners never went away, but every time it looked like they had a chance to get back into the game, they hit into a double play which killed their momentum. Rosario induced the first double play in the third inning, as Phil Butler bounced into a 6-4-3 twin killing to end the inning.
An inning later, Surrendy Windster rolled into a 4-6-3 double play, and Rosario induced a third double play as Steve Marino hit into a 5-4-3 double play in the fifth inning.
The bases were loaded for the Miners in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out, when Treece induced a huge, 4-6-3 inning ending double play. In the ninth, after allowing a leadoff single to Aaron Gates, Wilson induced a 6-4-3 double play, before hammering down the final out of the contest.
Rosario tossed five scoreless innings in his first start of the season to score the victory, allowing three hits along the way and fanned one batter as well. Wilson scored the save for the Crushers, after tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. The Lake Erie bullpen has still only allowed one run over 24.2 innings of work this season.
Seven out of Lake Erie's starting nine hit safely at least once on the night, while Stevens and Juan Sanchez led the way with two hits each. Sanchez and Quiles are leading the Crushers offensively with seven hits each on the road trip.
The Crushers will finish their road trip, and their three game series against the Southern Illinois Miners at Rent One Park in Marion, Ill., on Sunday night. Left-hander Roberto Padilla (0-1, 1.80) will start for the Crushers, and the Miners will counter with righty Tyler Lavigne (1-0, 0.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
