Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - Jeff Christian scored two goals and the Missouri Mavericks defeated the Amarillo Gorillas 3-2 in a shootout Saturday night at Independence Events Center. Missouri goaltender Doug Groenestege stopped 31 of 33 shots and seven of nine shots in the shootout for his fifth win of the season. Andrew Davis scored in the ninth round of the shootout to secure the victory for the Mavericks who improved to 8-9-1 on the season.

Christian scored the first and the last goals of regulation. He gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead 14:51 into the first period on assists from Simon Watson and Bill Vandermeer. Missouri held on to the lead through two periods of play despite being outshot 22-20 through the second period.

In the third, Austin Sutter made it a 1-1 game when he one-timed a deflected shot past Groenestege. That goal came at the 8:05 mark of the period, and the Gorillas continued to pressure. At the 17:31 mark of regulation, David Nimmo banged home his fourth of the season to give the Gorillas a 2-1 lead.

Missouri didn't give up and earned a four-on-three power play with under two minutes remaining. Christian tied the game at the 18:40 mark when he one-timed a Bill Vandermeer pass through the legs of Amarillo goaltender Mike Brown.

The teams remained tied through regulation and overtime forcing a shootout. Chad Hinz, Mike Burgoyne and Davis all scored for Missouri in the nine-round shootout to give Missouri the victory.

Both goaltenders played well in their respective nets. Brown stopped 36 of 38 shots for Amarillo including six of nine in the shootout and Groenestege made 31 saves on 33 shots and seven of nine in the shootout for the victory.

Missouri finished 1-9 on the power play and the team has a power play goal in seven of their last nine contests. The Mavericks also killed all six of Amarillo's power plays and Missouri hasn't allowed a power play goal in two straight games, both wins.

Missouri will travel to Mississippi to take on the RiverKings Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. looking for their third straight victory. Tune in live on 1030-AM or MissouriMavericks.com, or watch live on CHL-TV.
