LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Odessa Jackalopes 6-1 Saturday night at the Laredo Entertainment Center. With the win the Bucks improve to 11-4-4 (26 points) and increase their lead to three points over Rio Grande Valley for third in the Southern Conference.
Justin Styffe had five points (2-35), while Kyle Gajewski set aside 31 of 32 shots to lead the Bucks to the win.
For the second straight night the Bucks jumped out in front of the Jackalopes in the first period. Styffe tipped in Jeremy Swanson's pass from the left circle to score his fifth goal of the season. Swanson and Evan Schwabe picked up assists.
The Bucks improved to 8-1-3 when they score first this season.
The Bucks outshot the Jackalopes in the first period 14-11.
Laredo scored twice more in the second period to take a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Schwabe put the Bucks up 2-0 when he scored on a snap shot from the bottom of the right circle on a two-on-two break. The strike was Schwabe's team-leading eighth of the season with Mike Looby picking up the assist.
Styffe would increase the Bucks lead to 3-0 at the 6:19 mark of the second when he scored a short-handed goal from the top of the right circle on another break. The goal was Styffe's second of the game and sixth of the season. Styffe had six goals all of last season with Flint (IHL).
Sebastien Thinel put the Jackalopes (16-4-2, 34 points) on the board when he scored a backhander with just 1:46 left in the second period. The goal was Thinel's sixth of the season.
The Bucks (6-1-3 at home) outshot the Jackalopes in the second period 14-7.
Laredo is now 9-0-2 when they lead after two periods.
Laredo would break the game open with three goals in the third period.
Eric Giosa put the Bucks up 4-1 just 2:40 into the third when he tipped in Curtis Billsten's shot from the left circle. Giosa now has four goals on the campaign.
The Bucks would go up 5-1 a little over a minute later when Jeff Bes scored from the bottom of the slot. The goal was Bes' eighth of the season, and his 188th of his Bucks career.
Robin Richards would put the finishing touches on the win when he scored a power-play goal with just 41 seconds left in the third period. The goal was Richards' second of the season.
Juha Toivonen stopped 33 of 39 Bucks shots in defeat.
Laredo outshot Odessa 39-32.
Prior to Saturday's win the Bucks were 0-4-2 in their last six games against Odessa going back to last season's playoffs.
The Bucks improved to 1-0-2 against Odessa this season.
The Bucks continue their three-game homestand Tuesday when they host Corpus Christi at 7:00pm.
