Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Independence, MO 12/5/09 - The Amarillo Gorillas continued their fantastic road play Saturday night, but fell in a shootout to the Missouri Mavericks 3-2.

Despite Amarillo out shooting Missouri 9-2 midway through the opening period, veteran Maverick forward Jeff Christian snapped a shot past Gorillas goaltender Mike Brown from the far circle to give Missouri the 1-0 lead with less than six minutes remaining in the period. Gorillas defenseman Neil Smith added another highlight four minutes into the period, fighting Missouri's Carlyle Lewis. After one, Missouri 1 Amarillo 0.

Both teams did not score in the middle frame due to outstanding play from Mike Brown and Maverick goalie Doug Groenestege. Both netminders stopped a combined 22 shots. Missouri continued to lead after two periods of play 1-0.

Austin Sutter and David Nimmo had the magic sticks in the third, each scoring the game's tying & go-ahead goals. Missouri fought back with less than two minutes to play, as Jeff Christian tied the game on a 4-on-3 power-play marker. At the end of regulation, Amarillo 2 Missouri 2.

No goals were scored in overtime and the game went to a shootout. In the ninth round of the shootout tied at 2, Missouri's Andrew Davis stuck the puck high glove past Gorillas' netminder Mike Brown to preserve the victory. Final score in the shootout, Missouri 3 Amarillo 2.
