Kansas City Mavericks News Release
RAPID CITY, South Dakota - The Missouri Mavericks and Rapid City Rush went toe-to-toe Friday night at Rushmore Civic Plaza Arena. The Rush edged out the Mavericks in overtime, winning 3-2. Todd Griffith would score two goals for the Mavericks and goaltender Robby Nolan stopped 37 of 40 shots by Rapid City.
The Mavericks and Rush battled about as evenly as two teams could in the first period, with both teams tallying eight shots in the period, but none resulted in goals for either team. The Mavericks were awarded the only power play in the period on a tripping penalty called on Chris Eade.
The scoreless tie continued well into the middle frame as both teams remained neck-and-neck in offensive chances. With just under four minutes to play in the second period, Josh Beaulieu got the Rush on the board first after a turnover in the Mavericks' zone. The goal was unassisted. The goal marked the end of a 163 minute, 13 second shutout streak by the Mavericks. Beaulieu was also the last player to score a goal on a Mavericks' goaltender prior to the streak. The Rush outshot the Mavericks 10-8 in the period.
The Mavericks were quick to even the score, when just 39 seconds into the third period Todd Griffith beat Danny Bottachio through the legs to tie the score up at one. Assists went to Nick Sirota and Mike Berry. The Rush would retake the lead 11 minutes later on a power play goal from Scott Kalinchuk. Menei and Konrad Reeder were credited with assists on the goal. Todd Griffith was quick to respond yet again for the Mavericks, as he scored the game-tying goal just two minutes after the Kalinchuk goal. With the score tied at two, the game headed to overtime.
The extra period didn't last long, as Konrad Reeder netted the game winning goal just 12 seconds into overtime. Dave Grimson was given the assist on the goal.
The Mavericks finished the night zero-for-three on the power play. The Rush found better luck with man-power advantages, going one-for-two. Robby Nolan finished the night with 37 saves on 40 shots. Battochio stopped 24 of 26.
The Mavericks will wrap up their two-game weekend set with the Rush tomorrow night. The Mavs return home on Tuesday, March 1 when they take on the Dayton Gems for the first time at Independence Events Center.
