
Oilers Claim Shootout in Southaven

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- Marty Standish scored the game-winning goal with six minutes remaining to give the Tulsa Oilers a 6-5 victory over the Mississippi RiverKings in Central Hockey League action Friday, February 25th at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. The loss is the third straight for the RiverKings, who hope for a series split in the rematch tomorrow night at 7:05 PM.
Jack Combs scored both goals for Tulsa in the first period, as the Oilers took a 2-1 lead after one session of play. Combs' spinning shot in the slot beat Mississippi goaltender Larry Sterling at 12:18 for a 1-0 lead.
After R.G. Flath tied the game at 1-1 about three minutes later, Combs scored again at 17:37 when his shot from the left win deflected off Sterling's pads into the net for a 2-1 lead at the intermission break.
Flath scored his first power play goal and 14th of the season at 15:31 of the first on a deflection of a shot from Nathan Lutz. Brennan Sarazin also assisted on the RiverKings' scoring play.
Mississippi came out strong in the second period when Chris Auger deflected a shot for his eight goal of the year at 10 seconds of the middle session.
Michel Beausoleil gave Tulsa a 3-2 lead with a goal at 3:33, but the RiverKings took the lead with a pair of goals for a 4-3 lead going into the final frame.
Matt Summers scored his team-leading 21st marker of the year at 5:56 for a 3-3 tie, followed by Derek Landmesser scoring his eighth of the year at 17:58 for a 4-3 lead. Landmesser's shot from the point caromed high in the air and bounced past Tulsa goalie Ian Keserich and into the net for the goal.
Chris Richards gave the RiverKings a two-goal lead at 5-3 four minutes into the final period with his 15th goal of the season, but the Oilers scored the final three goals to claim their fifth win against Mississippi this season.
Anthony Battaglia got the Oilers within one at 5-4 with his eighth red-lighter of the season at 8:44, then Beausoleil scored his second of the night (on the power play) to tie the game at 5-5 four minutes later at 12:44, setting up Standish's game-winning effort.
Mississippi out shot the Oilers 39-34 for the game, including 18 in the second period, but the RiverKings were held to only eight shots in the final period as the Oilers outshot the RiverKings 15-8 in the final twenty minutes of the game.
Ian Keserich (17-10-0) claimed the win between the pipes for the RiverKings with a 34-save effort, while Larry Sterling (11-11-3) took the loss for the RiverKings with 28 saves.
The RiverKings fall to 24-25-4 for the season with the loss, while Tulsa improves to 28-22-2 with the victory.
Next up, the RiverKings again host the Tulsa Oilers at the DeSoto Civic Center on Saturday night, starting at 7:05 PM. It's another Season Ticket Redemption Night, where season ticket holders who have unused tickets can redeem them at the DCC box office for extra tickets to Saturday's game. The contest also supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
